Black Bear up a Tree on Springhouse Road

A black bear climbs up a tree in the backyard of a South Whitehall home Sunday afternoon.

UPDATED: 8 p.m.

Emergency scanner reports this afternoon indicated residents spotted a bear running through their backyards near Sunday afternoon.

By 6 p.m., a bear was about 25 feet up a tree in the backyard of 1481 Springhouse Road. At nightfall, South Whitehall Police and the Pa. Game Commission were still waiting under the trees a distance away. The bear was too high to tranquilize, according to a report by WFMZ.

Robert Vickery, 18, who lives in the house with his parents, said his father let their dog out into the yard where it went after the bear Sunday afternoon. Vickery said the bear took a swipe at the dog, and the dog bit the bear before the bear went up the tree.

A small group of neighbors stood across from the house watching the bear. They said they have seen deer and foxes in the neighborhood before, but never a bear.

Last month, Easton police shot and killed a bear that wandered into the city. The bear was shot after tranquilizers failed to work, according to police.

There was a previous bear sighting in Easton just 10 days before that.

That is a huge bear! All these animals have to go somewhere. The more we build the more the wild animals will roam the community.
