Does Salisbury High School Need a New Sign?

The Salisbury School Board says the old blue and white sign outside the high school is due for a makeover or needs to be replaced.

Some members of the Salisbury School Board say Salisbury High School's old blue and white sign on East Emmaus Avenue should be replaced or get a makeover.

Board President Russell Giordano said he passes the sign every day and is reminded "we have this beautiful new high school and we're still looking at that sign."

Giordano told the board at its operations meeting last week that since the district still has money left in the construction budget, "shouldn't we do something about that sign?"

When the board considered replacing the worn sign last year it discussed the possibility of getting Lehigh Career & Technical Institute students to do some of the work and use their bricklaying skills.

William Brackett, director of maintenance/buildings and grounds, said both sides of the sign would have to be redone since they are visible from the east and west.

He said engineers would have to design the sign because there is a large storm drain under the existing marquee, which would add to the cost, estimated between $20,000 and $30,000, including permits, fees and contractors.

Others suggested using about $10,000 in escrow the township owes the district to help defray the cost.

Board member John Moyer recommended keeping the sign's footer but replacing the sign to save money. He said the district may need to use a designer or architect to fashion the sign.

Brackett said the sign, which is made of a composite for outdoor use, could be cleaned instead of replaced.

Additional thought, if replacing or rebuilding the sign, some kind of reflective letters for night time visibility would be suggested. I was told electric does not exist to the signs area, and therefor lights are not an option. The sign is difficult to see at night.

Yes, the sign looks old & outdated. Why not beautify it but also do some simple landscaping around it with bricks & plants that stay green all year. Make it part of a student project every spring & fall to plant flowers, that's what they do at the elementary schools.

The sign should reflect the school itself and the talents of those walking the halls. The art students should design it, have it approved and then painted. Let the students be involved and everyone will see the pride!

I agree with president of the school board. We have a beautiful new school and an old sign to direct people to it. If you look at every other school in the league they have sign that is attractive. We should get a new sign ASAP.

Lets make the new sign Navy and White this time and not Southern Lehigh's Colors. The Brown letters on the new building addition should be Navy and White too! Who picked Brown? You can't even see the letters - I hope they didn't cost much.
