Derek Stringer of Salisbury High School, placed first in technical drafting at local SkillsUSA and will advance to state competition.

Salisbury High School student Derek Stringer will advance to a state competition after placing first in technical drafting at the District 11 SkillsUSA Championships.

Three other Salisbury students placed in the "Showcase of Skills" competition on Tuesday at the Allentown Fairgrounds Agri-Plex: Christopher Miller placed third in technical drafting; Ryan Williams placed second in Quiz Bowl and Quen Tran placed second in advertising design.

Stringer, along with 15 other first-place winners, will compete April 18-20 in Hershey.

The Salisbury students, who also attend Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, participated with students from six technical schools: LCTI, Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School, Career Institute of Technology in Easton, Monroe Career & Technical Institute in Bartonsville, Upper Bucks County Technical School in Perkasie and Colonial Academy in Wind Gap.

The competition, sponsored by the Skills USA Council, provides an opportunity for the students to demonstrate skills to industry representatives. Area business leaders judge the competitions.
