State Rep. Joe Brennan Arrested

Legislator is accused of punching and choking his wife at their Fountain Hill home this afternoon. He is also suspected of drunken driving.

UPDATED: 10:50 PM

State Rep. Joseph Brennan allegedly grabbed his wife by the neck, choked her with both hands, slapped and punched her in the face and wrestled her to the floor of their front porch in Fountain Hill, according to a published report in The Morning Call.

Then he drove away from his home drunk, police said.

According to online court records, Brennan, 48, of 1201 Delaware Ave., was charged with simple assault, a second degree misdemeanor, and harassment, a summary charge.

He was arraigned before on-duty District Judge Donna Butler of Emmaus at 9 p.m. and then committed to Lehigh County Prison after failing to post $7,000 bail.

The online record says nothing about a drunken driving charge, though the newspaper reported that Brennan failed a field sobriety test when he was stopped by a borough police officer on the 1400 block of Stanley Avenue. He was then taken to the DUI center at Lehigh County Prison for a blood test.

Brennan's wife, Norma Jane, had visible injuries to her left hand, knuckles, both feet and her left knee, according to the arrest affidavit. She reportedly told police what the legislator had done to her.

In October, Brennan was accepted into the accelerated rehabilitative disposition program for first-time offenders as the final disposition of a drunken driving arrest -- in June 2011 in South Bethlehem.

Brennan was arrested by Bethlehem police in front of his legislative office on W. Fourth St. after an eyewitness reported that he fell trying to get out of his car in the parking lot of the Wawa convenience store at Broad Street and Stefko Boulevard.

The next day, the state representative issued a contrite statement acknowledging that he has had a “long and personal struggle with alcohol.”

A Democrat who lives in Fountain Hill, Brennan represents the 133rd state House District, which includes large portions of the city of Bethlehem and Salisbury Township, as well as Fountain Hill, Catasauqua, Coplay, Hanover Township in Lehigh County and parts of Allentown and Whitehall Township.

He is currently seeking re-election for his fourth term in the state House and is opposed by Catasauqua Republican David Molony in the general election.

Sad part is, as long as his name is still on the ballot, he will probably win.

Rep Brennan has not served the 133rd district with honor and dignity. I am a teacher, if I did that ( twice), I would be gone! Censure him and remove him from office immediately. What is it with politicians that believe they can do whatever they please? I am disgusted.

Regardless of which party, this guy should be out. Now. No pension, no free health care, no nothing. Strip him of everything he has. He forefeited his right to anything he accumulated by the people he represents.

This is what I do not understand about Harrisburg. In any other state he'd be OUT OF OFFICE! But, here in PA they just SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG and you hear...well, he was talked to about it...it won't happen again..... Really? How many times was a certain female politician talked to about her poor behavior and she continued to run until she was FINALLY defeated in a primary. Joe, shame on you...and shame on Harrisburg for improperly handling this and other situations! The public needs to step up and make it known that they was to be served by a quality individual..............

This man is going to end up killing someone..either his wife or some innocent person or child on the road. The disease of addiciton does not care if you are homeless, middle class worker or a politician. It will take everything as long as it is allowed. He says he has had a long personal history with an alcohol problem...thats called an alcoholic. An Addict or Alcoholic will not stop until their consequences are great enough!...or painful enough. We can't act suprised is this man does more destruction to thos around him if we close our eyes to this ticking time bomb.
