Teen Killed in Crash Was Preparing for Baby's Birth

19-year-old Lehigh County man killed in rollover crash Friday

The 19-year-old killed in a Lehigh County crash on Friday night was a "strong, intelligent young man with a heart of gold," according to a friend's post on the victim's Facebook page.

William David Bickford lived in Orefield and worked as an assembler at Blue Mountain Machine, Inc., according to his Facebook page.

Bickford's last Facebook post was Thursday when he wrote about possible names for the baby his girlfriend is expecting: "For baby names we have this Jasmine Nicole Bickford, and Jayden Christopher Bickford like/no?"

Last Sunday, Bickford posted on Facebook "I love my beautiful girlfriend and our baby.

His girlfriend, Kate McGowan of Palmerton, is grieving.

"He was the kindest person I've ever met, and he would give the shirt off his back if he had to.

"I love him to death I am taking this rather hard but I have our unborn child to worry about," she said in a written message Saturday afternoon.

McGowan's promise to Bickford appeared in one of her many FB posts Saturday:

"William, if you see this, please know that I am sorry for all the fighting and that I love you very much and I will make sure the baby has your last name. You will always be in my heart and I will love you forever. I'll see you again, babe. Until then watch over me and the baby </3."

Bickford died when his car crashed, he was ejected and was then pinned beneath the vehicle when it rolled over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was driving southbound on Route 309 at 10:59 p.m. when he lost control of his car on a left-hand curve, according to state police at Fogelsville. His 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt went onto the shoulder and struck a concrete barrier of the Interstate 78 overpass.

The car continued for about 100 feet before rolling and partially ejecting Bickford. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

Roads were wet because of daylong rain, but police did not say whether that contributed to the accident.

He was a good person and was looking forward to being a father, a life was lost but another one is beginning, no parent ever deserves to bury a child, he may have been young but that gives no room for judgement, I have almost lot control of my car because of the wet roads. It could happen to anyone. That's why we need to cherish those in our lives. We've lost a friend, and my best friend lost the father of her child, and the person she loved. No one has the right to say anything bad about William, especially not publicly.

Let the family grieve their loss without throwing politics in the mix. Next thing you know PRESIDENT Obama will be blamed for cutting this child off in traffic!!! In a perfect world, the young star-crossed lovers would be married, but what difference would it have made? Seriously. She is still without her soulmate and this baby will never know it's father....how can ANYONE make a political statement out of that. As a member of a family who has had to bury a young one, please accept my sympathy and my apologies for some 'representatives' of the human race who cannot respect that.

My deepest condolences on this tragedy.Prayers go out to all those who mourn.

I drive a Chevy Cobalt, which is far from a little race car, and I know how easy it can be to lose control with it. It's a compact car that's easily blown around on the road, even when a tractor trailer rushes by, not to mention adding in wet road condition.

I'm going to also pray for the insensitive louts who should have been taught discretion. Think before you post.

May this young man rest in peace and his mom and dad learn to smile again. As a parent of two young adults, my heart and a prayer goes out to you. To the young women who faces the birth of his child I wish you courage and strength . Advice: Keep only good friends around you and the little one and get and education so you may be independent.God Bless

To the family of William, I am deeply sorry for your loss, my condolences.
To the people who have displayed graciousness in commenting in a positive manner, thank you.
To the sad excuses of individuals who clearly suffer from the delusion that your opinion even matters, suck it up, drop the ego, and apologize.
Understand that my wife and I were two of the 1st people to arrive on the scene after this tragic accident. No one should have to endure what we witnessed that night. Out of respect for the family I will spare you the details. But what I will do is clue you in. Yes he was driving an economical family oriented sedan, not a "rice rocket". It was unlikely he was traveling at an excessive rate of speed based on the damage pattern I witnessed, it seemed congruent with the type of damage you'd expect when traveling 55-65.. Within the ranges of the posted speed limit. Yes he disregarded use of his seat belt, but sadly in this incident, it most likely would not have made a difference.
I drove home numb, to be honest I barely remember the rest of my ride home. I thought of my 4 month old son who was with my wife and I that night, as a parent I hope that I never have to endure what William's family is currently dealing with. So while it may be a tall order for some of you I request that you show some decency and respect, the people involved deserve better.

No Parent should ever have to bury a child. It's just not right.

My heart goes out to everybody involved here, and it's a shame a young man in the prime of his life was taken too soon.

Not sure if wearing a seatbelt would have helped or not, but I can't help but wish he had it on. Maybe it would have helped even a little bit? Not judging him, mind you. We all make mistakes. God Bless him, his family, and Kate and her family as well.

Sorry for your loss. May God be with you while you search for healing. I can not possibly know what you are going through, but hopefully this will teach other young drivers how quickly a life can end while behind the wheel of a vehicle. I've had my share of accidents when I was younger due to stupidity and will teach my children how to respectfully drive a car.
