For the second year in a row, Kevin Deely, candidate for State Representative, has sponsored the Dig Pink Annual Volleyball Tournament between Southern Lehigh and Saucon Valley high schools. The October 17th event was just one way Deely shows his support for women’s health. With the upcoming general election only weeks away, women’s issues have emerged on both the national and local stage for serious debate.
Outraged by a slew of legislation that has attacked women’s health care this past year, a group of women in the 131st district have come together to inform local voters that Representative Justin Simmons has pushed his right-wing agenda too far when it comes to women’s health care. These determined women call themselves “Women for Deely,” and the message is clear: women do not want the government, and legislators like Rep. Simmons, making critical decisions about their bodies and their health.
Women for Deely organizer Ellen Bell said “Justin Simmons is trying to deflect attention from his voting record, but he cannot hide from his extreme votes against women’s rights”. She continued to say that “We want to show women the facts and help them understand that a vote for Simmons is a vote against women.”
Women for Deely highlight these major issues:
- Rep. Simmons co-sponsored one of the most controversial bills: HB 1077. In an attempt to shame women, the bill forces women to endure an invasive ultrasound procedure before an abortion, even if it is deemed medically unnecessary by her doctor. 1
- Rep. Simmons voted in May 2011 in favor of a bill that was intended to shut down Planned Parenthood and other health care facilities, despite the fact that 95% of the services offered by Planned Parenthood’s health centers are preventative, such as cancer screenings, STD screenings and treatment, and birth control education and supplies.2
- Rep. Simmons opposes comprehensive sex education classes in public schools.3
- Rep. Simmons opposes safe, legal abortion, even in the cases of rape and incest .4
- Rep. Simmons opposes insurance coverage of abortion, even when a woman’s life is in serious jeopardy 5
- Rep. Simmons opposes protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation 6
Planned Parenthood has endorsed Kevin Deely’s candidacy. “Unlike Representative Justin Simmons, Deely understands that women don’t turn to politicians for advice about mammograms, prenatal care or cancer treatments.” Executive Director Sari Stevens wrote in an endorsement for Deely. She added “We are at a pivotal moment in Pennsylvania history to take control of the dire political situation and elect candidates that trust women to make their own healthcare decisions. Support for Planned Parenthood and access to reproductive health services is not a democrat or republican issue. Kevin is the right choice for the voters of the 131st district.”
Deely, a father of two girls and husband of an expecting wife, has promised to fight for women’s rights. “I will fight against this legislation because I trust women to make their own decisions when it comes to their health” he said, adding, “Women express concerns about protecting their rights almost every time I knock on a door. While I promise to advocate for equal rights for all, it’s great to see this team of women out there advocating for themselves.”
Another Women for Deely activist, Joyce Moore said “In these tough economic times, after going through the worst recession since the Great Depression, Representative Simmons seems to want to focus on women’s health care choices, relegating us as second class citizens. I disagree with this as a financial planner, a woman, and mother of two.”
This election is a choice between a candidate who trusts women to make their own decisions, or a candidate who supports inserting needless government bureaucracy between a woman and her doctor.

Seems like a pretty big stretch of common sense to believe all of this. How bad are the polls Kevin? Heard you bombed another debate today. So why didn't you fill out the survey? I prefer my Representatives not to lie. Simmons has my vote.

Lol....Joyce K. Moore is a radical leftist who gets paid by the DNC and Occupy Wall Street to spout out democrat party propoganda. Her business has been such a failure that she has to get paid by the DNC to spread their lies. She is a stage one whackjob. Please go move to Philly Joyce and leave the rest of us alone.

Actually it is nice to see Kevin come up with a new topic. Guess the education funding lies aren't working. So let's lie about social issues. What's next Kevin legalizing Marijuana? I heard you were endorsed by Norml. Norml.org

Tanya....good point, With all the lies that have been spewed by Deely and The Democrats about Rep Simmons its time for Deely to feel the pain regarding his Pot smoking incident. Kevin....Norml would be the only REAL legitimate organzation supporting your campaign and with out the unions you would have pulled out of this race LONG ago.The voters will see through the smoke screen and lies spewed by your party. I know many teachers that will b e supporting Rep Simmons because they think Deely is a douche bag.

The Planned Parenthood endorsement. WOW! Congrats they have picked some real winners this election cycle! They dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars against Ryan Mackenzie and he blew Slattery out of the water! The thrashing was SOOOO bad that he didn't even stay in for the general.
I expect similar results in this race, Deely will get blown out and Planned Parenthood's hot streak will continue.

Are these the same warmed over attacks Deely himself made just a few days ago and Rep. Simmons already proved as false?
Here's the Simmons explanation. I am sure he didn't write again since this is just the Deely campaign throwing more (of the same) mud.

So Simmons is either gonna walk on the water or part it right? Keep this sleeze ball out of the room with me and my doctor. I guess he figures rape is the 'god given gift that keeps on giving' as well. Simmons is a puppet. Guess what, this WOMAN is for Deely.....

Simmons a Puppet ???What planet on your on gramma! The only puppet in this race is Deely. 100% of Deely's money comes from the Unions !!!!
Simmons money comes from a vast array of donors. The broad spectrum of donors that support Simmons proves he has done a great job in his first term.
So now he hates woman...really? I can tell you My wife and her girlfrends are voting for Justin. They think Rep Simmons is a hottie and the other guy looks like a drunk.

Gramma24- So were you a gramma at 24 or have 24 grand kids? Either way I am guessing you aren't having abortions. If you have read Simmons response from an early attack editorial you would find out the truth. Since you are probably Kevin Deely maybe voters should know you are a woman trapped in a man's body. That could explain your endorsements.
Tom Williams

Tanya, what's your point here? If Gramma24 is elderly she's too old to have abortions or deserve access to affordable health care treatment? So, she shouldn't care about the rights of younger women? And your bizarre statement about Kevin being a "woman trapped in a man's body"?? Kevin is endorsed by Planned Parenthood they commend his commitment to protect any woman's right to affordable access to reproductive health care. Deely doesn't need to be a woman to stand up for their rights. That's an explanation of the endorsement.
Joe, your wife and her "girlfriends" are voting for Simmons because he is a "hottie"? Really? Not because of his stance on any issues, or because of his voting record? Your comment is demeaning to women! I think most women and people in general practice their right to vote based on less superficial terms. I think women in this district are intelligent, thoughtful members of society and will vote based on the issues that are important to their livelihoods and families. Simmons should be ashamed to have you as a supporter.

Hey Tom.. My wife and her girlfriends are voting for Justin because of what he stands for and the fact that he has done a good job. They can see through Deely's rhetoric . Deely is soley resposible for the Easton teachers contract that raised taxes 16% there. Are you that stupid to think he wont do that here ! These gals saw the debates. They saw Rep Simmons destroy Deely on every issue.
Your liberal rhetoric is what all desperate democrats do when they are about to get their ass kicked an election ...LIE....LIE ...LIE.
Simmons is going to whip Deely . Talk to me then Tom about how much he hates women.

4:34 pm on Monday, October 29, 2012
Oh okay. Now your wife and her "girlfriends" are voting for Simmons based on issues and the issue you choose to highlight comes from a cartoon. You actually think Deely had the power to raise taxes 16%?? Maybe you should watch less looney toons and look into Simmons voting record. Simmons had the opportunity to reform property taxes for TWO YEARS and FAILED. A far more likely scenario. As for the lies you speak of. I looked at how Simmons responded to the survey. Did you, before deciding they were lies. The link is in the article.
Talk to you then about how much Simmons hates women? I'd like to here if you could stay on topic...

This is all just so foolish. Deely is a teacher putz. Teachers have trouble even getting along in a room full of kids, much less debating issues with real adults. Deely belongs in front of a bunch of kids, being overpaid and underworked. Not as a house representative. He's a union lacky putz. This election will be a blow out for Simmons. What a waste of time.
And most women are not stupid robots who vote for anybody who says they can have free abortions any time they want. Saying a vote against Deely is a vote against women paints them to be one dimensional idiots. While I do believe most liberal woman are one dimensional idiots, there are many others who are, thankfully, not.

Thanks PPL for getting our power back! Good work.
The Editors of the express times spent more time questioning both candidates then any of us and here is what they said.
Deely, an English teacher at Easton Area High School, has spent much of this campaign defending his former role as chief negotiator for the Easton Area School District’s teachers union. He argues that teachers were essentially handed an overly generous contract in 2007 and, as union negotiator, it wasn’t his job to protect district taxpayers.
It would, however, be his job to protect taxpayers while in Harrisburg. And his argument that he could be a strong advocate for all taxpayers -- not just teachers -- isn’t very convincing. When given a chance before The Express-Times editorial board to sum up his goals if elected, Deely spoke strictly about making sure teachers are treated fairly and students are given a fair shot.
Those are important goals, but residents of the 131st District deserve someone who can look at the big picture and say no to teachers unions when necessary. Deely is young, smart, energetic and likeable, but he isn’t the one who can do that.
Simmons has the broader, more nuanced approach.

Sorry there is more work to do in Harrisburg then just giving more money to schools. Even though Tom Williams seems to have a personal axe to grind. As the Editors said Simmons is the best choice.

Thank You Jeremy for objectively summing up the District 131 race .You hit the nail right on the head , Let me expound a little to furtther drive home your assessment :
- Deely drove up taxes 16% in Easton due to the teachers contract he negotiated. That contact eventually led to the release of 70 or so teachers whom lost their jobs as a result of Deelys gouging of the taxpayer.Make no mistake ...When Deely says "teachers need to be treated fairly" look no further than the Easton debacle he negotiated .
- Simmons clearly established himself as the right choice in both debates.Simmons has broad base knowledge of our district and the PA legislature.Deely does not.
- 100 % of Deely's financial support comes from the PSEA and other unions. Simmons gets broad base support from the entire private sector and all walks of life.Yet, the democrats paint Simmons as an extremist !!! Are you kidding me...Deely is in the pockets of the unions and they will demand his support .DEELY IS THE EXTREMIST BY A LONG SHOT!
The Democrats completely underestimated the skill sets of Rep Simmons and the strong campaign team that he has . Rep Simmons is a budding star in the Republican party and the democrats are just finding that out....
Simmons takes 56% of the votes and wins the election. If this was not a Presidential
year Simmons would beat Deely with 65 % of the vote ..easily.
