The Arts Academy, a new charter middle school in Salisbury Township, held a party Thursday evening at the Da Vinci Science Center to celebrate its anticipated opening in August. The Arts Academy will serve students in grades 5-8 and feature an academic and arts curriculum with classes in dance, figure skating, instrumental music, theater, vocal music and visual arts. The school has 325 students enrolled from throughout the Lehigh Valley, according to William Fitzpatrick, executive director. After falling behind early, the Salisbury High School boys basketball team fought back in the second half of Wednesday's District 11 2A semifinal game against Shenandoah Valley, twice tying the score in the final minutes, only to fall 53-48.
Lehigh Valley Hospital's Children's ER in Salisbury Township celebrated its first anniversary Monday. It is the region's only emergency room equipped and designed for children. More than 9,600 children visited the new emergency room in 2011, according to hospital officials. The Children’s ER is staffed by certified pediatric emergency nurses and child life specialists who help children cope with the fear associated with a hospital visit. The Salisbury High School boys basketball team won the Colonial League basketball title Friday night, 66-56 over Bangor at Freedom High School. It is Salisbury's first league championship in eight years. The win makes the Falcons (23-1) the No. 1 seed for the District 11 Class 2A tournament.
The lines formed early and remained steady through 4 p.m. Sunday at the 17th annual Superbowl of Chili at Pearly Baker's Alehouse in Easton. Nearly two dozen local restaurants participated, including Bolete in Salisbury Township. Top prize was awarded to Adam Walker of Porters Pub. His delicious chili topped with a chive and onion sour cream wowed the taste buds of the judges and public. Melt in Center Valley placed second and the Copperhead Grille placed third.
Runners stretched, chatted and warmed up by a log fire before tackling the annual Lehigh Valley Road Runners (LVRR) Super Bowl 10K Race on Sunday morning. The race began and ended at the LVRR clubhouse in the Lehigh Parkway and wound 2 1/2 miles through Salisbury Township. Race Director Chris Garges said 550 runners participated in the 10K. Lehigh County officials presented the newly renovated Lehigh County Community Corrections Center in Salisbury Township to the media Dec. 12. The residential facility for low-risk offenders at 1600 Riverside Drive now houses both men and women in separate areas at the site. The site was the former home of the Lehigh County Men's Community Corrections Center. The renovation added nearly 26,000 square feet and nearly doubled its capacity from 240 beds to 400. Wielding knives instead of scalpels, the "Sushi Surgeons," a team of doctors from Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township, competed against each other in a fundraiser sushi competition at Kome restaurant in the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley. The event raised money for the Children's ER at LVH.
