Today, May 17, is Primary Election Day – the day to make your choice for local officials such as commissioners and school board members who decide how your hard-earned tax dollars will be spent. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In Pennsylvania, primary elections are “closed,” meaning you must be registered as a Republican to vote for Republican candidates, or as a Democrat to vote for Democratic candidates. Voters registered as Independent can only vote on ballot questions (such as Northampton County’s Gracedale nursing home question) in this election. In Salisbury Township, there are…

DeFrank, 52, is a sales account executive for national accounts for Wacker Polymer, and has helped negotiate long-term contracts between chemical companies. “I’ve been involved in complex negotiations, tenuous at times, to work to find a compromise that both sides feel is fair,” DeFrank said. In addition, he has been a coach and manager for the Salisbury Youth Association’s baseball and basketball players. “I’ve …

As he seeks his third term on the Salisbury Township School Board, Thomas Mantz coined a term to describe himself: “kid-centric.” Mantz, 63, earned an associate degree in electronics from the former Spring Garden College in Philadelphia. Forty-three years ago he began working as an electronic engineer for AT&T Bell Laboratories, which has since evolved into the LSI Corporation. He moved to the Salisbury Township School District in 1998 and eight years ago considered his first run for school board. “I cared about what was going on and I was encouraged by a lot of people to run,” he recalled. …
As president of the Salisbury Township School Board since 2005, Russell Giordano has sought to maintain a leadership style that’s “collaborative and respectful.” Giordano, 58, said he felt compelled to seek a fourth, four-year term on the school board. “I can’t leave this board at a time when we have such tremendous challenges.” The Democrat is cross-filed to run in the May 17 primary election, so his name will appear on both the Democratic and Republican tickets. Brad Osborne, a chemical engineer and a South Whitehall commissioner, kicked-off his campaign Saturday for one of four at-large Lehigh County commissioner seats. At the Woodlawn Fire Co. social hall, where family, friends and elected officials gathered over coffee and doughnuts, Osborne said he is running for county commissioner for "a very simple reason"  -- the need for a more effective county board of commissioners. Historically, he said, the board has had difficulty in working productively with any administration, whether Democratic or Republican.  "A high performing board will work with …
When Norma Cusick served on the Salisbury Township Planning Commission, she wanted to be able to cut through the jargon in legal and land use documents she was reviewing. So she went back to college and became a certified paralegal. “What it made me do is learn to read documents and contracts,” said Cusick, now on the Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners. “I want to understand what I’m voting for when I vote yes or vote no.” She tells that story to illustrate how serious she is about public service – even unpaid public service like the planning commission. Cusick will be doing a lot more…
