Chinese New Year: Local Families Celebrate 'Year of the Snake' [Photos]

A Lehigh Valley non-profit gathered Saturday at Jordan UCC in South Whitehall to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Families with Children from China-Lehigh Valley chapter celebrated the Year of the Snake recently in South Whitehall with the help of Lehigh University students and the Lee-Ming Chinese School of Montgomery County.

About 200 people turned out for the annual Chinese New Year celebration, held this year at Jordan United Church of Christ social hall.

Young students from the Lee-Ming Chinese School, one of the oldest Chinese cultural education schools in Montgomery County, performed traditional dances. Chinese students from Lehigh University sang and help youngsters with crafts.

Other festivities included a ribbon dance and bubble-wrap "fireworks."

St. Joseph the Worker School students Alana Dee and Cassidy Power organized a raffle and chocolate sale to help raise money during the event for China Cares, which provides medical care for orphaned children with special needs.
