Five Family Events For The Weekend

We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children.

Consider a weekend of nanotech, turkey talk, Legos, a puppet performance and an artistic endeavor:

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

1. A big day of teeny, tiny science

Find out what's happening in Salisburywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Where/When: Da Vinci Science Center, 3145 Hamilton Blvd Bypass, Allentown, Saturday, March 26, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Children from ages five through 10 are invited to join undergraduate engineering students from Lehigh University for a day of hands-on science activities designed to teach kids about nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Youngsters will have the opportunity to make iridescent thin films, explore the behavior of nanofabric and play with nanosand. Visit the Da Vinci Center Web site  for additional details, including information about age-specific classes for which you can preregister.

Pricing: All of the nanotech activities are included as part of the general admission to the Da Vinci Science Center. 

2. Wild Turkey 101

Where/When: The Wildlands Conservancy's Trexler Environmental Center (part of the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus), Saturday, March 26 10 a.m. to noon

Why Go: This family program, sponsored by the , is a chance to learn everything you ever wanted to know about wild turkeys from a certified wildlife biologist and father of six, who has been studying wild turkeys and other animals for nearly four decades.The speaker, Bob Eriksen, currently serves as Director of Conservation Operations for the northeast region with the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Pricing: Free. Donations accepted. Register at the door

3. Calling all Lego lovers.

Where/When: Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main Street, Saturday, March 26, 2 to 4 p.m.

Why Go: The Emmaus Public Library invites kids of all ages to its on-going "Legos at the Library" series. All you need are some Legos and a desire to build. 

Pricing: Free

4. No strings attached. Sort of.

Where/When: JC Penney Court, Lehigh Valley Mall, Route 22 and Route 145 N, Whitehall, Saturday, March 26, 11 a.m.

Why Go: Sadecky's  puppets and the show "A Need to Read" offers kids a unique theatrical experience with a built-in lesson about the wonders of reading.

Price: FREE

5. Release your inner artist.

Where/When: Color Me Mine , Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley, 2845 Center Valley Parkway, Saucon Valley, Sunday, March 27, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why Go: Sunday is being advertised as "Family Day" which gives you the chance to experience what Color Me Mine has to offer at a reduced price. You start by picking from one of Color Me Mine's 400 ceramic pieces and then let the muses take over. Your finished piece is ready for pick up in about a week.  

Price: A table of four pays a $14 sitting fee, with a minimum $13 bisque purchase.
