Five Things To Do This Weekend

Local theater production about Walt Whitman, high-energy stepping, swing dancing, the Beach Boys and roller derby.

1. The Whitman Piece
 
Where/When: Touchstone Theatre presents this poignant piece, Thursday, April 7, through Saturday, April 9, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m., at The Charles A. Brown Ice House, 56 River Street, Sand Island, Bethlehem.
 
Why go: Support local playwright, Bill George, who tells the story of a small theatre company attempting to write a transcendent piece about the Civil War and its greatest poet, Walt Whitman.

2. Step Afrika
 
Where/When: Feel the uplifting beats on Friday, April 8, at 8 p.m. at Lafayette College, Williams Center for the Arts, 317 Hamilton St., Easton, PA.
 
Why go: These performers blend dance, spoken word and high-energy stomps, steps and rhythms in a way the Washington Post called “electrifying.”

3. Allentown Area Swing Dance Society Spring Dance
 
Where/When: Head back in time on Saturday, April 9, at 7 p.m. at the Fearless Fire Company’s Starlight Ballroom, 1221 S. Front St., Allentown.
 
Why go: Enjoy some complimentary apps and some slick moves. No experience necessary and no partner needed.

4. The Beach Boys
 
Where/When: These iconic performers will be playing Sunday, April 10, at 5 p.m., at the State Theatre, 453 Northampton St., Easton.
 
Why go: You don’t have to be a “California Girl” to feel those “Good Vibrations.” And did we mention John Stamos – that’s right, Uncle Jesse! – will be joining them?

5. Lehigh Valley Roller Girls Open House
 
Where/When: Calling all ladies! Strap on those old roller skates (yes, roller skates) and head over to the Independence Family Fun Center, 4345 Independence Dr., Schnecksville, on Monday, April 11, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
 
Why go: If you’ve ever thought roller derby sounded like an awesome idea, this is your perfect chance to check it out. Ladies 18 and up are welcome to meet and chat with the team and partake of some drills.
