Photo Gallery: First Day of Trout Season in Salisbury Township

Hundreds of fishermen flocked to Laubach Park Pond and the Little Lehigh with hopes of catching a record-breaking trout.

The skies cleared and temperatures warmed up just in time for local fishing enthusiasts to stake claim to their fishing spots throughout Salisbury Township on Saturday, April 2, the opening day of trout fishing season.

At Laubach Park Pond, which was recently stocked by the Cedarbrook Sportsmen Club, Nick Marley, 11, of Coopersburg was able to catch his maximum of five trout by 10:30 a.m., with plenty more biting.

Every year, Marley and his family catch their fill at Laubach Park Pond on opening day. The family smokes their fish to the consistency of jerky for a less fishy taste, Marley said.

Some fishermen went to extreme measures to hold “their” fishing spots by camping out overnight. This paid off for 16-year-old Austin Mest and Mike Gehris, both of Macungie. They were the unofficial fishing champions after catching two unique palominos, both measuring over two feet in length. Thomas Tomanik, 14, of Salisbury Township followed with a third palomino catch further upstream.

It was a beautiful day to catch some fish.
