Get Out: Five Things to Do This Weekend

The Allentown Freak Out Festival, movies and band concerts in the open air and some classic theater.

1. Allentown Freak Out Festival

Where/When: Between the 700 and 900 blocks of Hamilton Street, downtown Allentown. The festival kicks off at 9 p.m. Friday and resumes at 4 p.m. Saturday on the PPl Plaza at Ninth and Hamilton streets.

Why go: Um, let's see: Irish mummers, klezmer and gypsy music, fire performers, burlesque, bellydancers, short films, roving improv comedy and the Miss Freak Out pageant. Allentown, you're coming alive!

2. "Despicable Me"

Where/When: Roosevelt Park, Saucon and Woodward streets, Allentown. Dusk.

Why go: You can watch a movie any day, but movies in the park are a special treat. Take advantage while you can.

Cost: Free

3. Circle Mirror Transformation

Where/When: Head over to Civic Theatre of Allentown’s Black Box, 514 N. 19th Street, to watch this poignant play, running Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, June 26, at 2 p.m.

Why go: In 2010, this piece won the Obie Award for “Best New American Play.”

4. Municipal Band of Allentown

Where/When: Enjoy music in the open air as the Municipal Band of Allentown gives a concert in Allentown’s West Park, 16th and Turner Streets, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 24.

Why go: Bring a picnic basket and make a night of it.

5. Ice Cream and the Classics

Where/When: Learn about Henry David Thoreau in “Walden,” a 90-minute one-man show, presented by Touchstone Theatre, at Abbey Hill Theatre, 225 Porter St., Easton, Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, June 26, at 2 p.m.

Why go: A thought provoking piece that will keep the conversation going long after the curtain falls.
