Black Friday 'Cash Mob' to Benefit Local Business

A cash mob occurs when a group of people agree to patronize a local business at a pre-ordained time. The Hellertown cash mob event will be held Friday, Nov. 23 at 4pm.

A group of Hellertown volunteers is hoping that a "cash mob" will help promote the importance of supporting the local business community at the start of the 2012 holiday shopping season.

The Borough Business Revitalization Program (BBRP) group has decided to hold the first-ever Hellertown cash mob on Friday, Nov. 23 at 4pm.

Here's how a cash mob works, for those who are new to the concept:

  1. People meet at a neutral location at a pre-determined time.
  2. The group walks or drives to a local business to surprise the owner with a welcome infusion of cash.
  3. Each member of the group spends a minimum amount of money (typically $10 or so) at the business.

The BBRP has chosen the business that will benefit from the November cash mob--which will be held the day before Small Business Saturday--but it will not be announced beforehand, so the element of surprise won't be ruined.

The cash mob meeting point will be the Dewey Fire Company parking lot on Durham Street in Hellertown. The business that will be the recipient of cash mob dollars is a short drive away.

How cool! It would be great if they could spread it over a bunch of business especially if a couple hundred people show up.
