Great Escape: Euro Yogurt

Euro Yogurt in Bethlehem offers tart fro-yo with all the active cultures you need to stay healthy.

People love to talk about the weather. Particularly when we’re buried in snow or searing in the sun. This week, it was all about the record-breaking heat wave that slammed the Lehigh Valley, bringing temperatures into the triple digits.

I wish I could encourage everyone to grab their beach towels and either head down the shore or jump in their pools, but I know we’re not all that fortunate. I’m certainly not.

And so, I offer you an alternative way to escape and cool down: fro-yo. Not just your regular frozen yogurt. Fresh and tasty fro-yo from an underrated purveyor on Bethlehem’s South Side: Euro Yogurt. Nothing beats a frozen treat when the sidewalk could fry an egg.

I love Euro Yogurt. Truth be told, when I saw it crop up on Third Street a few years ago, I squealed, having long been a fan of Pinkberry and Red Mango. True, it may be an acquired taste. It’s not the sweet, creamy, ice creamy-type frozen yogurt that we’re all used to. The taste closer mimics the taste of Greek yogurt, which is tart and – I think – refreshing. You get all the active cultures that traditional yogurt provides.

Much like a TCBY, Euro Yogurt has several flavors, as well as an array of toppings, from chocolate chips and granola to blueberries and kiwi. (My favorite is an “original” with strawberries and mango. YUM. And don’t forget a drizzle of pomegranate syrup, which you’ll find on the counter, by the napkins.)

Unlike a TCBY, Euro Yogurt has an inviting vibe that makes it a place you want to go to and stay awhile. In the center of the room, you’ll find big, overstuffed black leather couches, perfect for lounging and navel-gazing. Beside the seating area, you’ll see shelves with books. Help yourself.

Or, if you’re more of a people-watcher, hop onto one of the electric orange stools in the display window. Yes, the window. It’s only fair – you get to watch the people, and the people get to watch you.

At least you have the fro-yo.
