Great Escape: Stone House Inn and Spa

This charming 200-year-old Macungie farmhouse houses one of the Lehigh Valley's best spas.

There are many ways to relax. For some, a walk will suffice. For others, nothing less than a full on, seven day vacation will do.  Vacation junkies, I’m picking up what you’re throwing down, but sadly, a vacation is not always possible, especially in these uncertain times.

And so, I offer to you a sort of out-of-body experience: A massage at the Stone House Inn and Spa. Now, I know what you’re thinking – spa, schma, I’ve done it all before.

True. I myself have done the Lehigh Valley spa circuit, and we all know that all spas are not created equal. And that’s why I was so delighted when I recently visited this Macungie gem.

Back in the 18th century, this stone farmhouse was home to one of the area’s most prominent families. Over the years it’s been renovated and additions have been built, but it still retains that warm, inviting charm that is so characteristic of these old structures.

Walking in you feel immediately transported. The grand staircase and foyer before you whisper of Victorian ladies beckoning you forth for tea. The contradiction of that old world feel with the salon and spa areas that flank it is part of its appeal. Before and after your appointment, the Stone House girls will offer you refreshments, and I encourage you to indulge. Help yourself to fresh brewed coffee and cookies, grab a magazine and let yourself onto their porch, furnished with comfy chairs. The garden is well maintained and definitely a highlight, so settle in and stay a while.

When it’s time for your appointment, you’ll be led into a room that’s everything a spa room should be. Clean, dimly lit and soothing. The skilled massage therapists will take it from here. Go traditional or try a hot stone treatment.

Looking to pamper your skin? Sign up for black mud detoxifying wrap, to extract impurities, or a hydrating rose wrap, to achieve that baby-soft feel.

Once all is said and done, you’ll be practically comatose; it’s that level of relaxation. In fact, you may want to stay a little longer. And why not? They have several cozy rooms to choose from.

How convenient.

Escape begins: Spa and salon hours are Tuesday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
