Wegman's Shoppers Give $58,000 to Local Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley received more than $58,000 thanks to Wegman's customers

Shoppers at Wegman's in Allentown, as well as the store's two other Lehigh Valley locations (near Bethlehem and Nazareth), donated $58,573 for Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley as part of a fall 2012 checkout campaign.

Customers at 45 Wegmans stores in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Eastern Pennsylvania, and the Greater Rochester region of New York made hunger relief donations totalling $1.38 million.

Check Out Hunger and Care About Hunger programs allowed customers to donate $1, $2 $3, $5 or any other amount at checkout with all of the proceeds going to each store's local food bank.

“We’re thankful for our customers and employees who step up to give in such a generous way,” said Linda Lovejoy, Wegmans' community relations manager. “Their donations at checkout help reduce hunger that exists right in our own neighborhoods and communities.”

The fall campaigns ran at various dates from October to December. Timing of the annual checkout scanning campaigns varies by regionDuring this time, the remaining Wegmans stores, which run annual checkout campaigns in February, held a one-time scanning campaign for Feeding America, which provided resources to food banks in the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.
