Fairview Road Still Closed From Hurricane Irene

Fairview Road in east Salisbury Township is still closed ever since torrential rains from Hurricane Irene flooded Trout Creek and damaged a box culvert more than a week ago, PennDOT officials said.

"It is the only state-owned infrastructure [in the region] that took significant damage, which is lucky. It could have been a lot worse," said Ron Young, a spokesman for PennDOT.

Fairview Road, which is next to , is closed to all traffic between Emmaus Avenue and Susquehanna Street, except for residents who live on the street. A small portion of the street that traverses Trout Creek is completely closed to traffic.

The box culvert is a square, concrete box less than 8 feet long, Young said. "It is not totally collapsed, water is still flowing through it," he said.

Damage to box culverts is "not unusual with this type of water flow," Young said. He added they are not sure if large debris in the swiftly moving creek caused the damage.
