Five Family Events for the Weekend

We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children.

This week we've got spirit dolls, a DIY project, ice cream, Crayola on-the-road and a kid-friendly matinee:

1. There’s more out there than Barbie.

Where/When: Museum of Indian Culture, 2825 Fish Hatchery Road, Allentown;Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5, from noon to 4 p.m.
Why Go: You can explore a special exhibit, carved by George Melloy, a retired Bethlehem Steel Metallurgical Engineerthat features more than 70 hand-carved and hand-painted wooden figures based on Hopi “kachinas” or spirit dolls.
Pricing: $5 for adults, $4 for children 12-17 and seniors over 60, and FREE for children under 12.

2. Retail stores offer free airconditioning

Where/When: The Home Depot, Saturday, June 4, 9 a.m. to noon, while supplies last. Our closest Home Depot store is at 1951 Glenwood Street SW, Allentown.
Why Go: Kids between the ages of five and 12 will get the chance to build wooden valet organizer, a perfect gift for moms, dads, grandparents or that special aunt or uncle.
Pricing: FREE. Plus each participant gets a “Kids Workshop” apron and a commemorative pin.

3. We all scream for ice cream. 

Where/When: America on Wheels Museum, 5 N. Front St., Allentown, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4.
Why Go: You’ll get the chance to learn some history about ice cream, see how the tasty treat is made first-hand, and then actually sample some ice cream.
Pricing: FREE with museum admission. Register in advance by calling the museum at 610-432-4200. Seating is limited to 80 children. 

4. A taste of The Crayola Factory, minus the trek to Easton.

Where/When: Lehigh Valley Mall, Route 22 and Route 145 N, Whitehall, Saturday, June 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
Why Go: The Crayola Factory will be on-site at the mall with a craft project, a costume character and information about its upcoming July 16 birthday bash.
Pricing: FREE, unless of course you go shopping afterward.

5. Movie theaters are air-conditioned too.

Where/When: , 19 S. 4th St., Emmaus, on Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m.
Why Go: "Rio," by the creators of "Ice Age," is rated G and should prove to be fun for kids and adults alike.
Pricing: Matinee showings are $3 for all ages.
