Save on Homegrown Slushes

Tired of throwing away over-ripened fruits? Here's a great way to enjoy them and save on sweet indulgences.

It’s hot. It’s humid. It seems like any time of the day is the right time for a cold treat.

But how many days in a row can you realistically spend at least $3 a pop at a commercial establishment to keep those core body temperatures at bay?

It’s fun to splurge on a sweet treat every now and then, but wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy it every single day without the guilt of spending money?

This is also the time of year when fruit doesn't seem to last quite as long in the kitchen.

For those of you with fruit trees (like we have), you know how they seem to start producing all at once, and how quickly they can turn into a bee-covered mess in your grass.

Or, maybe you over-picked at the local orchard.

+ hot summer temperatures = A delicious (and super healthy!) frugal treat for your family!

Here’s a cheap way to stay cool and keep more dollars in your pocket as in the final weeks of summer.

Frugal Family Fruit Slush

Ingredients:

  • Any ripe or over-ripened fruit you can dig up (apples, plums, apricots, pears, peaches, and blueberries are a great start!)
  • Sugar
  • Ice

Directions:

  • Simply slice your fruit into pieces small enough to fit into your blender. No need to peel!
  • Add ice and sugar to taste.
  • Push “liquefy” on the blender.
  • Wait two minutes, et voila! Your icy cold treat awaits you.

More inclined to smoothies?

Simply add bananas, milk or yogurt to the mix for a thick, creamy treat.

One blender-full should suffice for a family of four. Enjoy!
