Horses Survive Thanks to Western Salisbury Fire Department and Wawa

The horses at Boots and Saddle Riding Club survived the power outage thanks to the kindness of others.

The text came at 3:07 this afternoon and it read, "Just got word from the barn. Power and water has been restored. Yahoo!!!"  Yahoo is right! Boots and Saddle Riding Club had been without electricity since the freakish October snow storm on Saturday. Caring for 30-plus horses is difficult enough on a good day and becomes downright tiring when you add in the extra element of no electricity. That means, among other things, no way to get grain from the silo, extreme difficulty mucking out darkened stalls and perhaps most importantly, no way to get water! Quite a daunting thought - how are we going to get water to all of these horses?

That is when the beauty of the club atmosphere springs to life. Members showed up with large and not-so-large containers filled with water. The supply of water provided by club members took care of the water supply for the stall buckets. However, each pasture has a large water tub so our horses have access to clean water while they are turned out during the day. How to keep these tubs full became the next concern.

Here is where we want to give a shout out to the Western Salisbury Fire Department who graciously came and filled all of our outdoor water tubs. They assured us that they would bring water for as long as we needed it due to the power outage.  The other shout out goes to the fine folks at the Wawa on Lehigh Street. They allowed us to fill our water containers for free so we could ensure an adequate supply for in the barn.
