Today's Nurse

This year my husband and I RAN the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia--- my first 5K race!

As I sat down to work on this week’s post, so many issues popped into my head—the image of nursing, education levels of nurses, legislative issues affecting nurses (just to name a few).  But, as I thought some more, I decided I wanted to share something personal and special to me…my Mother’s Day!  I have two wonderful sons—Logan, age 5 and Ridley, age 3—and they make life worth living!  So…this is how my day went….

The alarm is buzzing at 5 a.m. and I fly out of bed to get dressed. My husband is already dressed and getting our last minute items packed—iPod, iPhone, ear buds, and sneakers.  Once I am ready to go, I wake the boys at 5:15 and, after a quick bathroom stop, load them into the car still in their cozy PJs.  By 5:30 we are on the road to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia.  We have done this every year since 2003—and my husband has done this for many years before that.  We go to honor his late mother, Mary.  We usually walk the 5K or do the one-mile "fun walk" since the boys are so little, but this year was different.  This year my husband and I RAN the 5K---my first 5K race!

This may seem like small beans to some, but for me it is HUGE!  I was not a runner until recently.  In October, I decided to change my life and set a goal to run the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  I hopped on my dusty treadmill and followed a "couch to 5K" plan week after week in the confines of my basement.  I pushed myself through this program with my strong will, the help of my friends (especially Marisa) and the undying support of my husband and children.

This Mother’s Day was truly special for me. I accomplished my goal and honored my amazing mother-in-law in the process.  I also got the greatest gifts made by my boys—a drawing of me from Logan and hand-print flowers from Ridley!  As I finally fell asleep Sunday night (after spending the rest of the day with my own amazing mom and sisters), I took a moment to be proud of myself, but not for long.  My next race, a four-mile run, is next week!  Back to the treadmill.
