Brief Morning Power Outage Affects LVH, Traffic Lights

PPL reports more than 2,300 customers without power in Salisbury, Lower Macungie; LVH uses backup generator power.

Tree branches falling on lines briefly zapped power this morning for more than 2,300 PPL customers -- including Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest -- in Salisbury and Lower Macungie.

The outage occurred at 10:30am at Pleasant Avenue and Fish Hatchery Road in Salisbury, PPL spokesman Bryan Hay said. It affected 2,322 customers.

PPL restored most of those customers (about 1,500) in 41 minutes, while the rest had their power back in just over an hour, Hay said.

Lehigh Valley Health Network reported on its website that power has been restored to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest and the Professional Park across the street. Normal operations have resumed at all locations except for the 1259 S. Cedar Crest Blvd. building, which will remain closed the remainder of the day, the website said.

The hospital continued operations using backup generator power, the LVHN website said.

An alert from Lower Macungie officials said various street lights were out along the Route 222 Bypass and Hamilton Boulevard. "The Public Works Department is working vigorously to place several generators at these intersections to run the traffic lights," the alert said.
