For Sale: Guns, Cars, Leather Jackets From Police Force

The Renaissance Auction Group of Reading will lead an auction of equipment from the now defunct Berks-Lehigh Regional Police force—one for the public and one for municipalities and police departments.

Six months after the Berks-Lehigh Regional Force disbanded, The Renaissance Auction Group in Reading will hold an auction of guns, unmarked police cars, leather jackets and other police items that once belonged to the former police department, Upper Macungie Supervisor Sam Ashmar said.

Two sessions will be held. The first, at 9 a.m. June 15, will be for municipalities and police departments only and will include fully equipped police cruisers with tactical gear, Ashmar said.

A second session for the public will immediately follow, and it will include guns, tools, storage containers, bicycle helmets, cameras, rechargeable flashlights, binoculars, portable radios and leather jackets. Items can be seen on The Renaissance Auction Group's website.

The auction will be held at the Independent Park Community Center, 150 Independent Road, Upper Macungie. Ashmar said the public will likely be able to browse items the day before the scheduled auction.

A licensed firearms entity will be on hand to legally transfer ownership of the guns. Background checks will be done on site, he said.

Ashmar anticipates the auction will raise at least $20,000, which will be held in escrow and distributed among the municipalities that had been part of the regional force for use toward liabilities such as pension costs. Upper Macungie, Topton, Lyons and Maxatawny Township had been part of the regional force.
