Patch Collector Gets Salisbury Police Department Patch

Deputy sheriff in Orlando, Fla. has 200 patches, adds Salisbury's two-headed bird

Robert Miller, a deputy sheriff in Orange County, Fla. who helps keep the peace in places like the Magic Kingdom and Epcot at Disney World in Orlando, stopped by the Salisbury Township Police Department Tuesday to ask Chief Allen Stiles a favor while he was in this patch of the woods.

Could he please have a Salisbury Township Police Department patch?

Miller, a collector of police department patches, wanted to add one more to his growing collection.

"I have more than 200 so far," he said.

Stiles happily handed him Salisbury's distinctive patch, with its insignia of a two-headed bird. The symbol dates back to the 1600's, Stiles said. As to what it means, Stile said, "I can't tell you what we think it means."

Police department patches are a badge of honor among law enforcement officials, and many, like Miller, collect them. A deputy sheriff for 47 years, Miller didn't start collecting patches until five years ago when he began working off-duty at Disney World, which is kind of like "patch and pin central" for collectors of such things. Standing in front of Magic Kingdom dressed in his crisp Orange County uniform, Miller soon found other police officers handing him their patches. It didn't take long before the collecting bug hit Miller, too.

Miller also gave Stiles an Orange County, Fla. sheriff department patch.  Miller said he hopes to collect more Lehigh Valley police department patches while he is visiting a friend in Salisbury Township. In fact, he has his eye on landing a patch from the next. What say you, Emmaus?

It's a small world after all.
