Salisbury Police Dog 'Fonzie' to Get Ballistic Vest

Salisbury's K-9 Fonzie will get a protective vest to help keep him safe on the job thanks to a group called HOWL.

Salisbury Township Police Department's K-9 Fonzie will soon have a ballistic vest to help keep him safe on the job thanks to a group called HOWL—Hounds on Working Leashes.

The vest can protect a dog's vital organs from bullets and stabbings.

HOWL members recently met with Fonzie and another K-9—Jack, who works with the Catasauqua Police Department—for a vest fitting. The dogs will get their new vest in about 45 days, according to a report on newsworking.net.

Fonzie's career includes a 2011 incident when he helped officers find a man hiding in the woods who was suspected of ramming an Emmaus police car.

Salisbury police said they got a call for reinforcement to the 400 block of Eagle Road, Emmaus, after a man ran into a nearby woods after a disturbance and allegedly rammed the police car.

Police from several departments secured the perimeter of the wooded area. After Fonzie picked up a scent, he went into the woods. Police scanned the area with flashlights and found the man trying to hide, police said.
