They should be thanking us for working till we're 70 to support their pensions when they retire at 50.

Mr. Hamill, if you wanted to retire at age 50, you should have gone into a profession that allows you to.
Do you want a 70 year old police officer protecting you. Also the average life expectancy in the US is 78.2. Average life expectancy for a police officer is 58.

The City of Allentown was almost bankrupted a few years ago when so many officers and firefighters retired a few years back because the officers worked overtime and then used those hours to determine their pension.

The city of Allentown is still near bankruptcy because of Afflerbach's inability to figure out that if you give a pension based on the highest months pay over a last three years, that anomalies would become the norm.

That is an old statistic that was used by the police union years ago, that is not the case.
These guys are retiring at the prime of their lives, when they have knowledge and health. Not all police jobs are "beat" jobs anyway. They are simply bankrupting our state.

20 years and out with full medical and 50%, 25 years at 75% and full medical for life for Statey's (my brother is one). We can no longer afford proper protection because of the public sector extortion.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He talks as if all police officers are the same and have the same contracts. Every department has their own contract negotiations and different offerings. I'm guessing that Rob Hamill would not last one day as a police officer, dealing with the people and the situations that they do on a daily basis or seeing the awful things that are routine to them.

Rob-Most municipal police have NO post retirement medical. 25 yrs. and 50% per the law. If you think you can live on that, you are sadly mistaken. You quoted stats from state and city PD not municipal which makes up the majority of the police in PA, I.e. townships and boroughs. Perhaps you should check into what the WIDOW of Officer Fox will receive. Do you think what she will receive will be adequate for the price he paid and she now pays with a young child and an UNBORN child?????? This was a day to THANK the police Not to debate you on truly inaccurate facts and something that screams of a bad experience with the law. Tell me, what is your profession? Maybe we can start a day to thank you as well...

Erin hit the nail on he head. This was a day to thank officers and Rob Hamill had some sort of compulsive need to make it all about him. Well, Rob, you got the attention you wanted, so please stop posting and let the rest of us show our appreciation for the men and women who are there at a moment's notice to keep us safe.

I would like to also thank our Emmaus and surrounding police departments for ALL they do. I've picked up the habit of listening to the scanner at night and can't begin to imagine sending my loved ones onto the streets to deal with the unknown. With all the recent activity in Emmaus (bank robberies, etc.), I'm still happy to say I feel secure in our police department and am confident that they do all they can to keep us protected. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you to each and every officer out there. I recently met Officer Fox and his wife this past summer at a hockey tournament. Her and I talked for two days straight almost non stop. I held their child and watched Brad as he blew kisses to his baby girl through the glass. He was so excited to have another one on the way. I met his aunt and uncle that weekend too, just the nicest family. It is so sad that he lost his life protecting us, but that is what police do everyday without thinking twice. On this national day of recognition it was also Brad's birthday. He will be sorely missed, and never forgotten along with all the other officers that have laid down their life to protect us.

This is a wonderfull story that reminded us about national tell a police officer thank you day and paid tribute to fallen officers that made the ultimate sacrifice. Then i read the first comment and all i could think of was wow what a loser this rob hamill guy must be.

Ron Hamill, it's people like you that make our jobs as police officers difacult for the little money we make for what we do and you want to complain about our retirement. Try doing our job then let's see what you think about the retirement. From a long devoted police officer
