Tell A Police Officer "Thank You" Today

Have you thanked a cop lately?

You can do this any day, but especially today, Saturday, Sept. 15, National Tell A Police Officer "Thank You" Day, please take time to thank a police officer for all police do in your community.

While they're only a few words, they will mean a lot.

Today's message is especially poignant considering Thursday's fatal shooting of an officer in the line of duty in Plymouth Township, Montgomery County.

by a man who was on probation after pleading guilty to forgery charges.

Fox is one of four officers killed in the line of duty in Pennsylvania so far this year.

Last year, of Bethlehem when he was shot to death responding to a complaint in Freemansburg. George Hitcho Jr. in the case in May.

They should be thanking us for working till we're 70 to support their pensions when they retire at 50.
JJ September 15, 2012 at 04:36 pm
Mr. Hamill, if you wanted to retire at age 50, you should have gone into a profession that allows you to.
Do you want a 70 year old police officer protecting you. Also the average life expectancy in the US is 78.2. Average life expectancy for a police officer is 58.

Thanks Wendy ;)
Erin T September 15, 2012 at 06:27 pm
@rob please fill me in-what exactly are the details of their pensions?
Stephanie Brown September 15, 2012 at 06:52 pm
The City of Allentown was almost bankrupted a few years ago when so many officers and firefighters retired a few years back because the officers worked overtime and then used those hours to determine their pension.
Benny Hill September 15, 2012 at 06:55 pm
thank to mayor afflerbach, worst mayor ever
Benny Hill September 15, 2012 at 06:56 pm
thank you officers for investigating the murder in south whitehall on leh street
Nancy O'Keefe September 15, 2012 at 07:52 pm
Thanks to the officers of the Emmaus PD, and especially Officer Rich, our foot patrol in downtown. I'm glad there is a special day to recognize you all.
careless fills September 15, 2012 at 08:05 pm
The city of Allentown is still near bankruptcy because of Afflerbach's inability to figure out that if you give a pension based on the highest months pay over a last three years, that anomalies would become the norm.
Rob Hamill September 15, 2012 at 08:22 pm
That is an old statistic that was used by the police union years ago, that is not the case.
These guys are retiring at the prime of their lives, when they have knowledge and health. Not all police jobs are "beat" jobs anyway. They are simply bankrupting our state.
Rob Hamill September 15, 2012 at 08:24 pm
Erin,
20 years and out with full medical and 50%, 25 years at 75% and full medical for life for Statey's (my brother is one). We can no longer afford proper protection because of the public sector extortion.
Ben Miller September 15, 2012 at 08:41 pm
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He talks as if all police officers are the same and have the same contracts. Every department has their own contract negotiations and different offerings. I'm guessing that Rob Hamill would not last one day as a police officer, dealing with the people and the situations that they do on a daily basis or seeing the awful things that are routine to them.
Erin T September 15, 2012 at 09:11 pm
Rob-Most municipal police have NO post retirement medical. 25 yrs. and 50% per the law. If you think you can live on that, you are sadly mistaken. You quoted stats from state and city PD not municipal which makes up the majority of the police in PA, I.e. townships and boroughs. Perhaps you should check into what the WIDOW of Officer Fox will receive. Do you think what she will receive will be adequate for the price he paid and she now pays with a young child and an UNBORN child?????? This was a day to THANK the police Not to debate you on truly inaccurate facts and something that screams of a bad experience with the law. Tell me, what is your profession? Maybe we can start a day to thank you as well...
Rob Hamill September 15, 2012 at 09:28 pm
I forgot to mention state COLA's
Ben Miller September 15, 2012 at 09:35 pm
Erin hit the nail on he head. This was a day to thank officers and Rob Hamill had some sort of compulsive need to make it all about him. Well, Rob, you got the attention you wanted, so please stop posting and let the rest of us show our appreciation for the men and women who are there at a moment's notice to keep us safe.

Thank you to Chris Leidy from Lower Saucon Police Dept. A very patient and kind person. Thank you for your service. Brian & Paula Steuer

I would like to also thank our Emmaus and surrounding police departments for ALL they do. I've picked up the habit of listening to the scanner at night and can't begin to imagine sending my loved ones onto the streets to deal with the unknown. With all the recent activity in Emmaus (bank robberies, etc.), I'm still happy to say I feel secure in our police department and am confident that they do all they can to keep us protected. THANK YOU!!!

Thank you to each and every officer out there. I recently met Officer Fox and his wife this past summer at a hockey tournament. Her and I talked for two days straight almost non stop. I held their child and watched Brad as he blew kisses to his baby girl through the glass. He was so excited to have another one on the way. I met his aunt and uncle that weekend too, just the nicest family. It is so sad that he lost his life protecting us, but that is what police do everyday without thinking twice. On this national day of recognition it was also Brad's birthday. He will be sorely missed, and never forgotten along with all the other officers that have laid down their life to protect us.

Thank you to all police officers for helping to keep us safe and for being willing to risk your lives to protect us.
ron September 16, 2012 at 04:14 am
This is a wonderfull story that reminded us about national tell a police officer thank you day and paid tribute to fallen officers that made the ultimate sacrifice. Then i read the first comment and all i could think of was wow what a loser this rob hamill guy must be.
Robert Sentner September 16, 2012 at 08:00 pm
I would like to thank each and every police officer that puts there life on the line each and every day to make our communities safe.
Troy Williams September 18, 2012 at 01:12 am
Ron Hamill, it's people like you that make our jobs as police officers difacult for the little money we make for what we do and you want to complain about our retirement. Try doing our job then let's see what you think about the retirement. From a long devoted police officer
Cm September 19, 2012 at 12:22 pm
JJ. if you are who I think you are , you would have gotten a thank you if you had done a serious investigation properly ....
JJ September 20, 2012 at 09:30 pm
Cm apparently you are mistaking me for someone else, because your comment does not make sense to me.

Everybody says "legalize it and tax it." That's just an oxymoron = once it is legal = youRead More can grow it in your back yard for free. Big Brother makes so much more already by enforcing the established laws, set up with the sole desire to incarcerate the addicted, that there will always be a fictional "War on Drugs."

Yes, and the person next to you drinking cannabis tea, does not effect you. The person who justRead More vaporized, does not effect you. Those hash oil tablets I just ate, won't effect you. Non-smoking means non-smoking - if there is someone smoking next to you, get out of the smoking section. You are right, marijuana is not like alcohol. If I were sitting next to you while I was high, and you annoyed the piss out of me by complaining about smokers in place that obviously allows smoking, I would just laugh it off or move away. I could smoke all night, and my mood would not change. If I were to drink, and keep drinking, eventually I would get confrontational, and we would be fighting. So, the guy next to you drinking can indeed effect you.

Tea Party groups are all very separate with separate missions. I understand the ones targeted wereRead More seeking the tax free charitable status because their stated mission is to educate about issues. They are not an actual "political" party. They will usually look favorably upon any candidate for lower taxes and smaller government. At least that is my understanding.
