Salisbury Restaurants, Automotive Garages Must Install Grease Traps

Salisbury commissioners passed grease trap ordinance because neighboring South Whitehall and Allentown require grease be removed from sewers.

Restaurants, commercial kitchens and automotive garages in Salisbury Township will be required to in their sewer lines to comply with a new ordinance the board of commissioners passed at its Oct.13 meeting.

Due to the elimination of the Patricia Drive pumping station, the sewage system in that area is sent to South Whitehall Township and then to the Allentown Waste Water Treatment Plant; both municipalities require that grease be removed from sewers.

The township will send notices to businesses that are affected. Compliance is due by June 1, 2012.

Similar businesses that hook into the Bethlehem waste water system need not comply with Salisbury’s grease trap ordinance at this time, Salisbury officials said. However, Bethlehem will eventually also require oil and grease to be removed from wastewater sent into its system, officials noted.

Failure to comply with the new ordinances may result in fines and penalties.
