Penn State is in the process of adding about 600 security cameras to its main campus in an effort to hinder theft and vandalism.

The cameras, which will be installed in dorms and dining halls, will cost about $1.4 million, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported

Installation of the cameras began in October, and will be completed by May, the Inquirer said. The cameras will be installed in 60 buildings on campus.

The cameras will be installed at dorm entrances and in elevators, but no where that could violate student privacy, Stan Latta, assistant vice president for housing, food services, and residence life, told the Inquirer.

Cameras will not be monitored 24 hours a day, but instead recordings will be used by university police in the event of a crime.
