Salisbury Baseball Stumbles in D11 Final

Salisbury Falcons fall to Pine Grove in conclusion of suspended District 11 2A championship baseball game.

The baseball team resumed its quest for a second straight Thursday afternoon against Pine Grove Area High School at Coca-Cola Park. They were there to finish the contest that was interrupted on Tuesday evening by passing thunderstorms.

The game resumed where it left off: tied 6-6 with two outs in the top of 7th inning. Falcon pitcher Justin Aungst put two runners on with walks. It looked like he might get out of the jam when Salisbury second baseman Evan Kulig made a diving stop of a grounder hit to his left. But Kulig's throw from his knees to first was off the mark, allowing Pine Grove's Jed Blankenhorn to score the go ahead run. A second Pine Grove runner was thrown out at the plate trying to score from on the play, ending their half of the inning.

Things looked promising for the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh after two hits, a sacrifice bunt and a walk had the bases loaded with only one out. Falcon sophomore Brad Vangeli stepped to the plate with a chance to drive in at least a tying run. Vangeli couldn't deliver, though, instead hitting into a game, and season, ending double play.
