Salisbury High School Could Get New Sign

The faded blue-and-white Salisbury High School sign on Emmaus Avenue needs a makeover or to be replaced, school board says.

The Salisbury School Board is considering several options to replace or refurbish the outdated blue-and-white Salisbury High School sign on Emmaus Avenue.

"This has kind of been a thorn in our side since we completed the [renovations to] the high school," said Board Member John Moyer.

William Brackett, director of maintenance/building and grounds, presented three designs to the board last week from FastSigns in Allentown that ranged from $4,000 to $11,000.

Brackett said there are several challenges to the project, including a utility pole, a street light that provides no light to the sign and a large underground storm system.

  • A black-and-white V-shaped sign made with a sandblasted high-density foam base that slides over the existing or upgraded three-pole mounting system. Cost: $11,000.
  • A two-sided single wall sign that would not be visible from both direction on Emmaus Avenue. Cost: $8,000.
  • The existing sign, cleaned and repainted. Cost: $4,000.

Moyer presented several designs created by graphic artists that use adhesive wraps made by 3M similar to ones used to advertise on the side of buses. The sign would keep its existing foundation and three posts.

"We would re-do the sign to make it more contemporary and use low plantings to hide the cheap-looking base," Moyer said.

The cost ranged from $5,000 to $11,000.

The board discussed possible ways to pay for the sign that included using money remaining in the high school building project fund and asking for help from the a private, non-profit organization that raises money to support a variety of projects in the district.
