Salisbury High School Student Recovering From Injuries in Upper Saucon Car Accident

Greg Young, a 17-year-old Salisbury  Township High School junior who was seriously injured in a car accident Friday night near the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley,  is still in intensive care at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, his parents Lisa and Greg Young said.

The accident occurred sometime after 10:00 p.m. Friday on Center Valley Parkway as Young was returning home after his busboy shift ended at the Red Robin restaurant in the Promenade Shops in Upper Saucon Township,  his parents said.

Young, whose Audi was the only vehicle involved in the accident, was ejected through the front passenger window and was found lying in the snow on the darkened road by passing motorists at around 10:15 p.m.,  Lisa Young said. Calls to Upper Saucon Township Police have not yet been returned.

On December 27, 2008, a 16-year-old Parkland High School student was killed and five others injured in a two-vehicle crash near the shopping center on Center Valley Parkway.

In Friday night’s accident, passing motorists, two couples riding in the same car, backtracked on the road after they thought it odd the Audi’s lit headlights were beaming from the roadside, she said.

“If they had not turned around my son would have died,” Lisa Young said.

One of the motorists, who she later recognized as one of her customers at the Wachovia Bank in Macungie where she works, ran to help her son.  “When he went to check my son, he had no pulse,” she said. The man began shouting at Young to try to get a response and the others covered him with coats and blankets.

If there is any levity in the situation, she said, it is that as the good Samaritan was yelling at Young to try to get a response, her son suddenly shouted back, “What?”  He was able to give the man his father’s cell phone number. The man called the elder Greg Young, who was bowling at the Fearless Fire Co., who then called his wife at their home on E. Emmaus Avenue.

 Young is in critical condition in the intensive care unit and has a shattered pelvis and numerous other internal injuries, his parents said. “He has good days and bad days,” his mother said.  “He is going to be here awhile. He has a long recovery ahead,” she said.

 “Thank God he has no head injuries. It’s a miracle. He has guardian angels watching over him. Two of them are my parents in heaven.”

Lisa and Greg Young were encouraged Monday night when their son, who despite being on a ventilator and sedated, managed to say “Mom” and “water” and smile.  Lisa Young said when she told her son about the outpouring of support for him in the community and that his friends Alec, Andy, Brent and Aaron were rooting for him, he opened his eyes and smiled.

 “Please thank those kids out there. That’s one thing that keeps him going. I tell him every day how many friends he has,” she said. “And tell them to keep those prayers going. Down the road we are going to need them.”
