Salisbury High School's Uneven Baseball Field Poses Safety Hazard, Drainage Problem

Could cost $250,000 to regrade field, fix drainage and make other improvements.

Repairs to fix Salisbury High School's uneven baseball field and other improvements could cost as much as $250,000, according to a proposal submitted to the Salisbury Township School Board by D'Huy Engineering, Inc.  of Bethlehem. If the board approves the proposal, the firm would send the work out for bid.

The uneven field has posed a safety hazard to players and caused drainage problems, said William Brackett, director of maintenance, buildings and grounds.  The field's slope would need to be regraded and the chain link backstop and chain link fence along the first and third base lines would be replaced, D'Huy's  report said.

The backstop fence is currently supporting the retaining wall, which would be replaced.

D'Huy included alternate bids for the baseball field:  a new drainage system below the surface of the infield; a new storage building next to the home dugout and new safety netting installed along the first base line to protect the high school from foul balls.

Another alternate bid would provide new dugouts along the first and third base lines and a new storage building at Western Elementary School's softball field.

"I keep thinking that more than ever we are going to have to separate our wants from our needs," said school board president Russell Giordano. " Dugouts are a want, not a need."

The baseball field improvements have been part of the high school development plan underway for the last four years.

The district can pay for it only with money designated for capital improvements.
