Salisbury School Enrollment Better Than Expected

Salisbury elementary schools' enrollment grew this year.

enrollment this year is better than originally projected, Superintendent Robert Gross told the school board at their Sept. 14 board meeting.

Salisbury was projected to have about 1,562 enrolled this year; the district actually has 1,609 students enrolled this year. That means there are 47 more students in the district than anticipated.

“On the good news side, over the past five years, we’ve only seen a decline of about 38 students per year.”

“The moral of the story is, we’ve lost the least amount of students over a six-year span now,” Gross said.

He told the board that the elementary schools in particular have received more students enrolled than expected.

“The good news is folks want to come here,” he told the board.

Gross noted that there has been an increase is students who need special services, but said that was not a problem for the district.

“That’s fine,” he said. “We’ll welcome any child with open arms.”

At previous meetings, Gross and Assistant Superintendent Louise Beauchemin explained that aging populations in Salisbury coupled with families moving resulted in declining enrollment for the district.

The board has also discussed the possibility of closing one of the two elementary schools due to declining enrollment.
