School Board Set to Support Township Library Tax

The Salisbury School Board is set to pass a resolution at Wednesday night's meeting that will support the library tax referedum

The Salisbury School Board is set to throw its weight behind a voter referendum that, if passed next month, will keep funding township residents' access to local library services.

The Salisbury Board of Commissioners, in a 3-2 vote last month, passed a resolution placing a referendum question on the Nov. 5 general election ballot that will ask township voters if they want to continue paying a 6-cent levy on every $1,000 of assessed value for services at the Allentown Public Library or any other library.

School directors, at Wednesday night's agenda meeting, are scheduled to pass a resolution stating support for the measure. The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Salisbury School Board administration building, located at 140 Salisbury Ave. in Allentown.

Salisbury Township does not have a public library. Residents either use the Allentown Public Library or other area and state libraries.

If the library levy is lifted -- a tax that averages about $15 per year -- those who want to use out-of-town library services would have to pay for it out of pocket.

The cost of joining the Allentown Public Library is $40 per year, per household.
