Photo Gallery: “Reading is Magic” Literacy Fundraiser Held at Lehigh Valley Hospital

Event to benefit The Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley.

The Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley held a breakfast fundraiser with a magic theme Saturday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township.

The Literacy Center is a nonprofit agency in Allentown that helps more than 600 people each year learn basic literacy, prepare for GEDs and learn English as a second language. It has more than 300 people on a waiting list, according to Phillip Weber, vice president of the center.

“We just don’t have the funds to provide the instruction and the facilities. This is one of our fundraising events to get some more money, so we can help more people,” Weber said.

Volunteers dressed as wizards and storybook characters as they guided children to  magic-themed activities, including  science experiments, magic shows and interactive storytelling with live music.

The Super Duper Book Swap was one of the highlights of the morning. Children were asked to bring gently used books to the event and received a ticket for each donation. In turn, they were able to select an equal number of books to take home.
