Check Out Western Salisbury Community Day and Police K-9 Trials

Celebrate Community in Western Salisbury, see a day-long music festival in nearby Breinigsville, run a 5K in memory of Catherine Boulay or get spooked at Dorney Park.

The Western Salisbury Fire Department is hosting its fifth annual Community Day Saturday, with tours of the fire station, games and live fire extinguisher training.

The community event will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station and Green Acres Park, which is at the intersection of S. Ott Street and Green Acres Drive. Other planned activities include fire truck displays and local business displays.

Police officers and their K-9 partners from the Lehigh Valley and beyond will converge at Salisbury High School's football field Sunday morning at 9  for the third annual Police K-9 Trials. The K-9 trails were first held in 2011 to honor fallen Berks County Deputy Sheriff Kyle PagerlyProceeds from Saturday's event will benefit fallen police officers.

The K-9 events scheduled are: Obedience, Agility, Fastest Dog, Call Off, K-9 Alley and Muzzle Redirect.

The first annual Victory BrewGrass Fest will take place Saturday at Valley Preferred Cycling Center in nearby Breinigsville. The day-long concert will run from 11 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m. 

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate Saturday. Music will run non-stop at two different stage areas and the music and will be staggered by 15 minutes per area so that there is never a dull moment or lull in the entertainment.  The main stage area for bands will be in the infield of the velodrome between the third and and fourth turns.  Another smaller and more laid back performance tent will be at the entrance and food court area of the facility. Also in and around town this weekend are:

  • The fifth annual Catherine Boulay Foundation "Fight Like a Girl" 5K Run/Walk will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lehigh Parkway, Allentown. The foundation supports cancer patients and their families. Registration starts at 9 a.m., and the race starts at 10:30 a.m. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female in both running and walking divisions. Medals will also be awarded to the top male and female cancer survivors to finish. Stay for provided lunch and family activities, including a raffle with some great prizes. $20 walker T-Shirt/$25 runner Tech Shirt. 
  • Bring the whole family to the Bath and Body Works County Fair at the South Mall on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Pick up an exclusive four-ounce Harvest Gathering candle free with any Home Fragrance purchase (while supplies last, one per person, valid only on September 21 in participating stores).
  • Halloween Haunt continues at Dorney Park, located at 4000 Dorney Park Road, South Whitehall with mazes, scary creatures and thrill rides. (Not for anyone under 13, according to the park website.)   • The Haunt 5K Zombie Run and 6K Run Like Hell will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Dorney Park. Costumes are not required but encouraged. Race day registration/packet pickup: 7:30 a.m.-8:45 a.m. $30 fee; $45 for both races. Register as a "human" for $30.
