Chances are you know a veteran. There are more than 21.8 million of them in the United States, according to the 2010 Census. Each year, on Nov. 11, the country honors their service … please add your pictures, comments, stories and memories about your service, or about the veterans in your life. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Bill Sugra Memorial Golf Outing Marks Its 10th Year

The golf outing is held every year to honor the late Bill Sugra of Salisbury Township, who died Sept. 11 at the World Trade Center.

The Sugra family of Salisbury Township held its annual Bill Sugra Memorial Golf Outing on Friday, August 26th at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem Township. The family has been holding the annual fundraiser in honor of their son and brother, Bill Sugra, who died in the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001. This year, the family expects to distribute around $88,000 to local charitable organizations, bringing their 10-year total to more than $300,000 given in honor of their son.

Veterans Benefits Expo at Lehigh Carbon Community College

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent to host Veterans Resource Expo to educate veterans, particularly those returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, about benefits available to them through government agencies.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent will host a Veterans Resource Expo Saturday, July 23 for local veterans and their families at Lehigh Carbon Community College's Community Service Center from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. The event is designed to educate veterans, particularly those recently returning from service in Iraq or Afghanistan, about benefits available to them through government agencies. These include  education, disability, compensation, and other applicable entitlements. Representatives from county, state, and federal veterans’ affairs departments will be on hand to explain their agency’s role in the benefit process and describe the various services they provide veterans and their families. Salisbury Patch Editor Remembers Afghanistan

The U.S. hadn’t finished the job but now was redeploying resources to Iraq.

The news of Osama bin Laden’s death brought back memories of the time I reported from Afghanistan eight years ago.  Afghanistan was not my original assignment. It was March 2003 and the United States had just invaded Iraq. Afghanistan had been knocked off the front page, the nation’s attention was focused on this new war and we had a new public enemy. Afghanistan, the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, that was old news. I was working for The Morning Call at the time and was selected to be embedded with a Pennsylvania National Guard unit based in Allentown. After months of preparation, we were all set to go to Iraq. I had been sent to train with British soldiers for a week. That meant learning what to do in a poison gas attack, how to behave at …
