Red Cross Offers Tips to Beat the Heat

Follow these suggestions to stay healthy during extreme heat and know the symptoms and how to provide first aid for life-threatening heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

With temperatures expected to soar above 90 degrees -- and the temperature-humidity index expected to climb to about 100 -- for the second consecutive day, the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley provides these common sense tips for keep you and yours safe in the heat: Extreme heat can cause physical difficulties which, in some instances, can be life-threatening. Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms in the legs or abdomen caused by exposure to high heat and humidity and loss of fluids and electrolytes. Heat cramps are often an early sign that the body is having trouble with the heat. Firefighter Injured in Fountain Hill House Fire

Five people were displaced and a firefighter injured due to an apartment house fire on Seneca Street Wednesday in Fountain Hill.

A firefighter was injured Wednesday while helping to put out a house fire in the 913 Seneca Street in Fountain Hill. At about 5 p.m. yesterday, a resident of the two-unit apartment house came home from pushing her baby in a stroller and found the building on fire and firefighters were already there, according to The Morning Call. A firefighter hurt his knee when he fell inside the house. Fountain Hill Assistant Chief Dan Pope said the firefighter was taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital for treatment, The Express-Times reports. The fire displaced three adults and an infant from the second floor, and one adult from the first floor. According to the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley, there are several things you should do after an earthquake. They include, but are not limited to: 1. Each time you feel an aftershock, drop, cover and hold on. Aftershocks frequently occur minutes, days, weeks and even months following an earthquake. 2. Look quickly for damage in and around your home and get everyone out if your home is unsafe. 3. Listen to a portable, battery-operated or hand-crank radio for updated emergency information and instructions. 3. Open closet and cabinet doors carefully as contents may have shifted. 4. Keep animals under your direct control.

Update: Crews Battle Fountain Hill House Fire

Double home threatened on Lechauwecki Avenue.

Update at 12:30 p.m.  A fire at a duplex at 601-603 Lechauwecki Ave. in Fountain Hill this morning has displaced six people and caused about $150,000 to $175,000 in damages, Assistant Fire Chief Chief Dan Pope said. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. However, Pope said it appears the fire started in a back bedroom at 603 Lechauwecki Ave. He said officials have reason to believe it was accidental. He said 603 Lechauwecki Ave. sustained heavy fire damage. The fire at 601 Lechauwecki Ave. was contained to the upper floor.  No one was injured.
