Bird Mania Reopens After Car Crashed Into Store

Bird Mania on W. Emmaus Avenue in Salisbury Township reopens after rebuilding from the damage done by a car crashing into the store.

Sarah Ayers is happy to have a macaw named Oliver out of her house and back at his perch at the reconstructed Bird Mania on W. Emmaus Avenue in Salisbury Township -- and not just because he can swear like a sailor. The cacophony of squawking and chirping at Bird Mania is a sign that the parakeets, macaws and other birds are glad to be home after about a month away in the wake of an SUV crashing into the shop on Nov. 13. "Happy birds make a  lot of noise," explained Ayers, a store volunteer and noted Lehigh Valley blues singer. Bird Mania opened for its normal business hours this week for the first time since the SUV went through the front wall, just missing about 50 birds and Debbie Lentz, who co-owns the shop with her fiance, Tom Mantz…

Bird Mania Open for Business Despite Crash

Customers can still get their birds groomed and buy seeds and supplies by calling Bird Mania co-owners Debbie Lentz and Tom Mantz.

Bird Mania co-owners Debbie Lentz and Tom Mantz want their customers to know all the birds are fine despite the minivan that crashed through the front of their store Tuesday.  The birds and merchandise were moved to the owners' home in Salisbury Township. Although the store at 3235 W. Emmaus Avenue is temporarily closed, they said customers can still get their birds groomed and buy seeds and supplies from Bird Mania by calling 610-657-0661. The owners will arrange the transaction with customers.

Cars Collide Outside Bird Mania Crash

Shortly after the driver of a minivan crashed through Bird Mania Tuesday morning, two vehicles collided across the street on W. Emmaus Avenue.

Shortly after the driver of a minivan crashed through the front of Bird Mania Tuesday morning, two vehicles collided across the street in the 3200 block of W. Emmaus Avenue, injuring one of the drivers. Cindy Kehm of Emmaus was injured when the Ford SUV she was driving was struck from behind by a Jeep, according to her son Rob Kehm. She was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, according to police. Salisbury Township Police officer Mike Palansky said Kehm was at a stop on W. Emmaus Avenue and about to turn left onto Second Avenue, when the driver of the Jeep, who tried to stop, struck her from behind. Rob Kehm said his mother's accident occurred as she was returning to their landscaping business after purchasing nails …
