Pa. Lawmakers Look at Medicaid Expansion

Debate on whether to expand Medicaid in Pa. is partisan so far

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Lawmakers are just beginning the debate on whether to expand Medicaid in Pennsylvania, and so far, the discussion sits on partisan lines. This week, Majority Whip Rep. Stan Saylor, R-York, said he plans to introduce a bill that would block the controversial expansion of Medicaid under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. “Expanding Medicaid is the wrong course of action and is a disaster in the making. Adding more people to Medicaid is not something we should aspire to nor celebrate,” said Saylor in a memo circulated to House legislators. “It is not the way to address the uninsured population.” In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a portion of ACA unconstitutional that …

The ACA will not control costs. The Affordable Care Act is relying on dozens of pilot programs and demonstration projects to find better ways of delivering care, the results of which have been disappointing. Further, we will still be left with a system in which no one will be choosing between health care and other uses of money. And if no one is making those choices, health care spending will …   more ›

Dent Votes to Repeal Obamacare

Charlie Dent part of House vote this week to repeal Obamacare

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, R-15th, released this statement about his vote Wednesday to repeal Obamacare: “The 2010 health care law contains numerous detrimental policies that not only fail to appropriately address the complex problems of our health care system, but hurt our economy and hardworking American families. "Repealing the law would allow Congress to enact meaningful reform measures that reduce cost, expand access and improve quality. Its repeal would also prevent the imposition of over 20 new or higher taxes that will cost Americans $675 billion over the next decade and stifle economic growth. "While the political reality is repeal will not occur under this Administration, which still considers the deeply flawed law its signature …

What Does Obamacare Ruling Mean for Pa.?

Keystone state lawmakers say Supreme Court ruling on health care is "unfortunate"

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Requiring individuals to purchase health care is constitutional. Withholding extensive federal funding from states as punishment is not constitutional. Also: paying a tax for not buying health insurance is constitutional. On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the major components Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that includes the controversial individual mandate on the grounds that Congress has powers to levy taxes and fees. The decision was 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the majority. Upholding the act will give hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians access to health care, whether through an individually purchased policy or through a Medicaid expansion. …

This is a very good reason, not only to contribute to Romney, but also help get Joe Rooney in to office to replace Allyson Schwartz as she voted for Obamacare without even reading the entire bill. I guess she thinks if she never gets voted out of office that it won't effect her!   more ›

How Will Obamacare Decision Affect Pa. Voters?

Political experts say Pennsylvania voters may be more or less motivated if the Supreme Court strikes down Obama's health care reform

By G. Terry Madonna & Michael L.Young The New York Times calls Pennsylvania a “toss up state.” Others have tagged it a “battleground state” and even a “swing state.” Electoral labels aside, Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes comprise the second largest prize among the competitive states. Not surprisingly, both presidential campaigns seem to be taking the state seriously despite Barack Obama’s approximate 8-point lead and a string of Democratic victories stretching back to 1988. But if the Keystone State is in play now, it may not be for long once an impending Supreme Court decision is handed down.   Shortly, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to announce whether the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obama Care) passes constitutional …

They divided it up in every possible way to milk us for as much as they possibly could. After five months, it did get taken care of - heck, they even admitted it was inappropriate billing - but that kind of stuff has become normal these days. Tea Party Candidate, Docs Blast 'Obamacare'

At Bethlehem forum, a congressional candidate, two local doctors and a nurse say ‘Obamacare’ will destroy the health care system.

President Obama’s signature health care law is going to undermine doctor-patient relationships, close hospitals, cripple small businesses and result in rationed care, according to four health care professionals, including a congressional candidate, who spoke at a forum in Bethlehem Wednesday night. The Lehigh Valley Coalition for Health Care Reform, a nonprofit with ties to conservative and physicians groups, presented the two-hour forum at Bethlehem Area Public Library to a sympathetic crowd of about 25. The panel included Laureen Cummings, a Scranton Tea Party founder and the Republican candidate for the redistricted 17th congressional district, currently held by Tim Holden. Cummings, an LPN who owns a home health care agency in Old …

Hopefully it won't cost too many people their jobs or make too many people have to change their insurance from a plan they liked to something less. When my husband was unemployed I liked being able to choose between paying for health insurance or food! I guess the government and the supreme court has taken that choice away from us!   more ›
