A Lehigh County judge sentenced former State Representative Joe Brennan to a mandatory 90 days in prison Thursday after he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alchohol. Judge Maria Dantos also sentenced Brennan to 18 months' probation for simple assault stemming from the same incident when he struck his wife on Aug. 15 at their Fountain Hill home before driving away drunk. His blood-alcohol content measured 0.22 percent. The state's legal limit is 0.08 percent. Brennan, who must also pay a $1,500 fine, will begin serving his sentence Monday in Lehigh County Prison. Beleaguered state Rep. Joe Brennan finishes up his tenure as a legislator today amid pending charges that he assaulted his wife and drove away drunk on an August afternoon.. But he’ll spend no time on the unemployment line. In fact, Capitolwire.com reported Thursday, Brennan will continue to collect a paycheck from the state of Pennsylvania as an employee of the House Democratic Caucus. Brennan will start a new job as a research analyst in the caucus’ Legislative Policy and Research Office on Monday. The salary is $72,000 a year – about $10,000 less than what he makes as a legislator – and he will continue to receive the same health benefits for which members and staff are eligible, Capitolwire reported. Local Democrats met Sunday and selected Danny McNeill, 65, of Whitehall Township to replace state Rep. Joe Brennan as their candidate in the 133rd House race this fall, according to the Morning Call. McNeill, 65, is a Whitehall Township commissioner and former union leader. Brennan withdrew from the race after being charged with assaulting his wife and driving drunk two weeks ago. Patch readers said Brennan should step down in an informal poll taken after his arrest. Sunday's vote will be submitted to the state Democratic Party's executive committee for review. A final decision on Brennan's replacement is expected tomorrow, according to Lehigh Valley Live.

Facing criminal charges and a continuing struggle with alcohol addiction, Brennan announced Wednesday that he would not continue with his re-election campaign. He intends to remain in office until his term expires on Nov. 30. On Thursday, Commonwealth Court granted Brennan’s request to have his name removed from the ballot and granted a state Democratic Party request to replace him on the ballot. Somebody with Former Pa. Rep. Joe Brennan's problems should not have gotten to be a legislator. It seems that voters need to know more about the people they elect. Making voting easier for uninformed voters is not likely to result in better government.   more ›
