Here are a few fun facts about celebrating a new year that might stay with you longer than your resolutions: 1. The first New Year’s Eve ball was made because of a ban on fireworks. In 1904, the owner of the New York Times threw a huge New Year’s Eve party with an enormous fireworks display. This became a tradition -- hence the Times Square party every year -- until 1907, when NYC banned fireworks. So that everyone would have something pretty to look at when midnight struck, a huge ball was made out of wood and iron and illuminated with 100 light bulbs. Whatever your resolution is, here are some tips to help you stick to it throughout the year. 1. Make it attainable. Be sure that your resolution is attainable. Sticking to your monthly budget is attainable—making a million dollars may not be. 2. Tell everyone. If you tell everyone about your resolution, you are more likely to keep it. If you want to quit smoking, you can even go as far as telling your friends that you'll give them $50 if they catch you lighting up. 3. Be specific. The Tournament of Roses Parade kicks off the new year on Jan. 1, 2013 at 11 a.m. eastern time and will be broadcast on NBC, ABC and the Hallmark Channel. The parade lasts about two hours. The theme of the 2013 parade is "Oh, The Places You'll Go" as inspired by a Dr. Seuss book. This year's grand marshall will be Dr. Jane Goodall.
