Here are a few fun facts about celebrating a new year that might stay with you longer than your resolutions: 1. The first New Year’s Eve ball was made because of a ban on fireworks. In 1904, the owner of the New York Times threw a huge New Year’s Eve party with an enormous fireworks display. This became a tradition -- hence the Times Square party every year -- until 1907, when NYC banned fireworks. So that everyone would have something pretty to look at when midnight struck, a huge ball was made out of wood and iron and illuminated with 100 light bulbs. What Are the Words to 'Auld Lang Syne'?

Now you can stop mumbling through the New Year's Eve song, Auld Lang Syne, and learn the actual lyrics.

Midnight strikes on New Year's Eve and someone inevitably starts belting the first few words of "Auld Lang Syne." You may ask, why is that? Well, it's tradition to get a little nostalgic on New Year's Eve. The song, attributed to Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns in 1788, is about reminiscing. "Auld Lang Syne" literally translates to "Old Long Since," and more roughly it means "long, long ago" or "days gone by." The custom began in Scotland to sing the poem on the last evening of the year, and the trend soon spread to other parts of the British Isles. British immigrants then brought "Auld Lang Syne" to other parts of the world, including America. A more modern variation on the tradition is to mumble through the forgotten words. But …

When police pull drivers over for suspected drunken driving, officers ask them to perform field sobriety tests and to take a breath test to measure Blood Alcohol Content. A BAC test measures the percentage of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream. Pennsylvania's legal limit is 0.08. According to the Virginia Tech Alcohol Abuse Prevention website, every 40 minutes, 0.01 percent of alcohol leaves your system.  Check out the chart in the media portion of this article to see what your limit is. All PA Wine & Spirits Stores will be open until 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve. There are 15 state stores in Lehigh County and 13 in Northampton County listed on the LCB's website. Check the lists for addresses and phone numbers.

Celebrate New Year's Eve on Main Street in Bethlehem

Live music, cash bar, free champagne toast planned for inaugural open air New Year's Eve Celebration on Main Street.

  The Downtown Bethlehem Association will host the first ever Main Street New Year’s Eve celebration to ring in 2013. The open-air celebration in the Historic Downtown will feature live music with the Trouble City All-Stars and the Lehigh Valley Harmonizers, a cash bar, food vendors and a free champagne toast at midnight. In Bethlehem, we all know about the Peeps drop, but this event will culminate at midnight with a “Bethlehem Star rise.” “Our board of directors wanted to pull this together because there is nothing that happens anymore at midnight in Bethlehem,” said Samantha Schwartz, manager of the DBA.
