Any post-convention "bounce" for presidential candidates seems destined not to matter in the 2012 race

By G. Terry Madonna and Michael Young The endless campaign, also known as the 2012 American presidential election, isn’t quite ending yet. But as Churchill might have put it, we have at least reached the beginning of the end. With less than 90 days until Election Day, the party conventions are almost upon us and the fall debates not far behind. The respective party conventions will take place in late August and early September. Traditionally, the presidential debates are held in October. But will either the conventions or the debates matter in this persistently tight race? So far the equivalent of political dynamite has failed to move the numbers significantly on either side—not hundreds of millions of dollars worth of negative ads, not …

Patch's snapshot poll of Pennsylvania Republicans shows strong support for Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as running mate.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has selected Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate. Lehigh Valley and Pennsylvania Republicans weigh in.
Reaction was swift across the country to Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate in the 2012 presidential election. A Red Keystone Snap Poll by Patch found strong support for Ryan among Pennsylvania Republicans. Whether reached Saturday by email or phone, or in release of a prepared statement, Lehigh Valley Republicans and the Pennsylvania Republican Party chair lauded the pick. Here is what they said: * U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent: "Governor Romney made a smart choice by selecting Paul Ryan to be his Vice Presidential running mate. Representative Ryan couples a warm personality and manner with a keen intellect. He has focused on bringing America’s debt under control so that it won’t continue to impede economic growth and job …

Red Keystone Snap Poll shows strong support for Ryan among Pennsylvania Republicans.
A snap Red Keystone survey of GOP activists in Pennsylvania by Patch shows strong support for U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s choice for running mate. Ryan as vice presidential nominee will help galvanize Republican voters in the Keystone State, according to more than two thirds of respondents. More than half also say Ryan will help the GOP ticket win undecided voters. Respondents aren’t concerned that Democrats can win by running against Ryan's existing budget plans and particularly his proposal for Medicare. Several respondents noted that Ryan will help the GOP win young voters. But one Republican commented, “I don't believe that a VP pick ultimately changes elections. Perhaps the last time it did was in 1960.” Here are other …

Political analysts speculate that a win for Mitt Romney could pose trouble for Gov. Tom Corbett if the economy continues to falter under a GOP administration

By G. Terry Madonna & Michael L. Young Ironies abound in politics. Some are amusing; others are just bizarre. But few top the one now brewing in the Keystone State. Paradoxically enough, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett seeking to banish Barack Obama from the White House, may instead be sowing the seeds for his own re-election defeat two years later. In short, if Romney wins in 2012, Corbett could lose in 2014. Understanding this peculiar electoral enigma requires familiarity with Pennsylvania’s famous (or infamous) “eight-year cycle.” This is the sixty-year pattern in gubernatorial elections that witnesses the Republican and Democratic parties switching control of the governor’s office every eight years. From 1954 through (at least) …
