Andy Cerco Named Salisbury Varsity Football Coach

Nearly two months after the Salisbury High School varsity football coach Rob Sawicki resigned amid controversy, the district has replaced him with Parkland High School's assistant coach Andy Cerco.

Nearly two months after Salisbury High School's head football coach resigned after some parents complained he demeaned players, the school district announced Wednesday it appointed Andy Cerco, an assistant football coach at Parkland High School Cerco has worked as a special education teacher at Salisbury High School. Cerco, who was introduced to the school board at its Jan. 19 meeting, said he would meet with the players on Friday and parents sometime next week. Cerco joins the football program after a bitter and fractious time last fall when parents and booster club members complained to the school board about then head football coach Rob Sawicki. After Salisbury Patch ran the story about the complaints, the controversy continued online …

Mr. Cerco...welcome and I wish you the best of luck! In addition to the school, players and parents, I would also like to make the request that you begin to build a relationship with the Salisbury Youth Association. There are many great families in the community that participate in the SYA programs. They all want the same as you. Reach out...I am sure you will not be disappointed.   more ›

No Salisbury Administrator Pressured Football Coach to Quit, Deeb Says

Salisbury director of student activities and athletics says neither she nor other administrators asked Rob Sawicki to resign.

No Salisbury Township School District administrator put pressure on the varsity football coach to quit, according to Monica Deeb, director of student activities and athletics.  Deeb said Tuesday that she met with Rob Sawicki Friday afternoon and he said then he would resign. “He’s been thinking about this for some time, that he wants to do something else,” she said.  Sawicki told The Morning Call that he wanted to spend more time with his young children, and that his resignation had nothing to do with parents' complaints to the school board.    Sawicki’s resignation came two days after a group of football booster club members complained to the school board that he had demeaned and verbally abused some players and undermined morale. They …

Football is stupid and should be banned from all schools and as a youth activity. Too many young men have had their health and lives ruined by injuries (including many mental, social, and psychological) suffered whilst playing this silly game. All of the so called life lessons claimed by proponents of fottball can be better learnt through a whole slew of other activities, including nearly any …   more ›

Sawicki: Complaints to Board Didn't Cause Resignation

Outgoing coach says he needs to spend more time with his young children.

The outgoing Salisbury High head football coach has told The Morning Call, "We prepared the kids to the best of our ability." Rob Sawicki says he needs to spend more time with his young children. Last week's complaints to the school board about his alleged mistreatment of players did not lead to his ouster, Sawicki said. His resignation came after parents complained last week that he humiliated players by calling them names. The head of the football booster club told Patch on Monday that he's glad to see Sawicki out. You can tell us what you think by taking our poll and adding your comments. In related high school sports news, the head coach of Dieruff High School in Allentown has also resigned in anticipation of a move to Oregon, his home…

I won't take the poll because the options are stupid and controversial. Coach Sawicki should have resigned or should have been asked to leave because of his record, not because of unhappy families. Once again, the Administration failed to do its job. If there had been rumors or verbal abuses, it should have been dealt earlier to stop them, not after the season. Every teacher/coach/ administrator …   more ›

Embattled Salisbury High Football Coach Resigns

Days after parents complained to the school board about him, Rob Sawicki quits as head Salisbury High varsity football coach.

Salisbury High School's Head Football Coach Rob Sawicki has resigned just days after some team parents and booster club members complained to the school board that he demeaned players.   After Salisbury Patch ran a story Friday about the complaints, the controversy continued online with comments both for and against Sawicki. Here is the statement the school district released today announcing Sawicki's resignation: "After four seasons as Salisbury's head varsity football coach, Rob Sawicki has decided to step down from his head coaching duties. Citing personal reasons, he presented his letter of resignation to school officials late Friday afternoon. Under Sawicki, the Falcons compiled a record of 5-36 during his four-years as head coach. He…

Red Eagle all you do is talk about hiding behind a computer, you go under a stupid alias like red eagle. Who would put that as a username on an official article like this. If you can set your username as something so immature why shouldn't I. Also, Sawicki already resigned so like "Red Eagle" posted your opinions don't matter anymore so there is nothing else left to discuss but the future.   more ›

Parents Complain Salisbury Coach Humiliated Football Players

Some Salisbury Football Booster Club members complained to school board that football coach verbally abused team and undermined morale, others say coaching lacks leadership.

Some Salisbury Football Booster Club members complained to the Salisbury School Board the Salisbury High School varsity football coach had routinely verbally abused the team and undermined morale. Others said parents and their children were afraid to complain because they feared retribution. Butch Rossetti, president of the booster club, said they have complained about coach Rob Sawicki to the district's athletic director Monica Deeb and other administrators at Salisbury High School, as recently as last week, but were still frustrated. "We want to make sure our voice is heard. Wins and losses are not the only thing that we were concerned with, we were concerned with treatment," Rossetti said. "Coaches are mentors to our boys and the …
