Salisbury Police are warning residents about a rash of burglaries in the west end of the township.
Police said Tuesday that the west end of Salisbury Township has been hit with "several daytime burglaries in which the front doors have been forced open" between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Front or back doors have been kicked in, police said in a press release. Burglars hit a home Monday on Lehigh Parkway North and a home in the 2500 block of Lindberg Avenue Tuesday morning, police said. Police posted on Facebook: We are asking that residents remain vigilant and observant when driving and walking their neighborhoods. We have increased patrols in the targeted areas but will heavily rely on the community's help with information as well. The Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners has hired Brian Zulic of Bath as the 17th full-time officer of the Salisbury Police Department. Zulic, who has served in part-time police roles with the Lehighton Police Department and the Lansford Police Department, will earn $50,377.60. "He'll do the job that we want, once he goes through our training," said Salisbury Police Chief Allen Stiles. Zulic served in the U.S. Marine Corps beginning in 2008 and is currently serving with the Marine Reserve Artillery Unit in Reading. Zulic graduated from Lackawanna College's Police Academy in 2009. Salisbury Township Police Department's K-9 Fonzie will soon have a ballistic vest to help keep him safe on the job thanks to a group called HOWL—Hounds on Working Leashes. The vest can protect a dog's vital organs from bullets and stabbings. HOWL members recently met with Fonzie and another K-9—Jack, who works with the Catasauqua Police Department—for a vest fitting. The dogs will get their new vest in about 45 days, according to a report on newsworking.net. You can see photos of Fonzie and Jack on HOWL's Facebook Page. Assault in Bethlehem leads police to recover gun stolen from Salisbury Township home.
Police say they recovered a gun stolen from a Salisbury Township home as part of two arrests made in Bethlehem this week. Bethlehem police were called to Fillmore Street for a report of a man with a gun on Monday. Police arrested two men, according to court records: Both men are in Northampton County jail. Two residents saw Sanchez with a gun and police found the weapon wedged between in fence on East Third Street, according to a Lehigh Valley Live report. The gun had been stolen from a Salisbury Township home, according to a post on the Salisbury Police Department's Facebook Page. Police did not say when the gun was stolen.

Salisbury Township police shot and killed a stray pit bull Monday after it mauled two adults and a dog and lunged at the officers, according to a police news release. Police were called to the 1400 block of Pearl Avenue to investigate a 911 call of a female screaming for help, police said. When officers arrived, they found a woman who was bitten and knocked down by a stray pit bull in her front yard. While police, with the assistance of Animal Control and the Lehigh County Humane Society, were helping the woman, they were alerted that a 73-year-old man and his dog whom he was walking were being attacked nearby, police said. Several vehicles parked in the Country Club Road area had their windows shot out with a BB-style pellet gun late last week, according Salisbury Township Police. There were reports of similar incidents on surrounding streets in Western Salisbury, as well as in Emmaus and South Whitehall Township, according to Salisbury Township Police Department's Facebook page. Salisbury police posted the following message: "We are working hard to identify and intercept the parties responsible but are requesting your vigilance to assist us where we cannot be at all times. If you see or hear anything suspicious that you feel may be related, please call 610-437-5252 or simply 911."

Jennifer Velez-Negron was living with a friend in Salisbury Township shortly before her burning body was found two days after Christmas on a wooded residential road in the township, according to WFMZ. Velez-Negron, 26, formerly of Reading, had recently lost her job and was stressed about providing for her three children, her younger sister Yesenia Velez told WFMZ. Salisbury police discovered Velez-Negron's body after a passing motorist reported a small fire on the side of Chestnut Hill Road the morning of Dec. 27. An autopsy revealed Velez-Negron died from suffocation and was set on fire. Her body was burned beyond recognition, prompting investigators to seek the public's help identifying her.
