Student, 4 Adults Running for Salisbury School Board

The Salisbury school board race includes one incumbent and three challengers in the May primary.

The Salisbury School Board race features perhaps the youngest municipal candidate in the Lehigh Valley—high school student Chad Gleissl. Five candidates are running for four seats, each a four-year-term. Patch is in the process of sending a questionnaire to the candidates. But here's a preview of the race thanks to information from the League of Women Voters (LMV) online voters guide for the primary. Challenges facing the school district include a $740K budget gap. Primary election day is Tuesday, May 21. Four candidates are cross-filed: Christopher J. Spedaliere, a development scientist, is running only on the Republican ticket. The top four vote-getters on the Republican and Democratic ballot will face off in the general election. If …

$740K Budget Gap Faces Salisbury School Board

Salisbury School Board directors will meet on May 1 to tackle methods targeted to close the $740,00 gap in the 2013-14 school budget and keep any possible tax increase low.

The Salisbury Board of School Directors will meet on May 1 to discuss ways to close a $740,000 gap in the 2013-14 school budget. School directors passed a preliminary $31.7 million budget for the 2013-14 school year in February. Salisbury Township School District Business Administrator Robert Bruchak said Wednesday night that he's confident the directors will whittle the gap down. "I'm hearing positive things on the budget," he said. "We'll improve on that number. Some of it could come out of the fund balance. We have options and we'll look at all of those options." Bruchak told the board Wednesday night that some budgetary items he's looking at for savings are fuel bid results, bargaining unit contract details, an RFP for office machine …

The high school and middle school were rewarded for successes in enhancing and extending teaching and learning with thoughtful and innovative implementations of technology.

The Salisbury Township School District received a distinguished program award for the 2012-13 school year from representatives of Apple at a recent board meeting. Both Salisbury High School and Salisbury Middle School were rewarded for successes in enhancing and extending teaching and learning with thoughtful and innovative implementations of technology. The Apple Distinguished Program, dubbed Teaching and Learning 2014, is a designation reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s vision of exemplary learning environments. "Fewer than 200 schools got this distinction and Salisbury got two schools designated, not just one," said Peter Oyler, executive developmental…

Salisbury School Board Gets First Look at 2013-14 Budget

There's a potential $1.2 million gap in Salisbury Township School District's $31 million budget.

A preliminary look at the Salisbury Township School District's 2013-2014 budget shows a potential $1.2 million gap between revenue and expenses in a $31 million spending plan without a tax increase. Business Administrator Robert Bruchak presented the school board's operations committee last week with an early look at the budget, which has not been formally presented. The preliminary budget will be presented Jan. 30. Revenues are projected to be $30.7 million and expenses are projected to be $31.9 million. Bruchak said the budget figures are expected to change, particularly as assessment appeals are settled, some bonds are refinanced and Gov. Corbett presents his budget on Feb. 5. Does Salisbury High School Need a New Sign?

The Salisbury School Board says the old blue and white sign outside the high school is due for a makeover or needs to be replaced.

Some members of the Salisbury School Board say Salisbury High School's old blue and white sign on East Emmaus Avenue should be replaced or get a makeover. Board President Russell Giordano said he passes the sign every day and is reminded "we have this beautiful new high school and we're still looking at that sign." Giordano told the board at its operations meeting last week that since the district still has money left in the construction budget, "shouldn't we do something about that sign?" When the board considered replacing the worn sign last year it discussed the possibility of getting Lehigh Career & Technical Institute students to do some of the work and use their bricklaying skills. William Brackett, director of maintenance/buildings …

Lets make the new sign Navy and White this time and not Southern Lehigh's Colors. The Brown letters on the new building addition should be Navy and White too! Who picked Brown? You can't even see the letters - I hope they didn't cost much.   more ›

Salisbury Plans to Present 2013-2014 Budget in January

Salisbury Business Administrator Robert Bruchak plans to present budget early so board can 'see what the challenges are.'

Salisbury Township School District Business Administrator Robert Bruchak wants to present the 2013-2014 budget on a series of early deadlines, beginning with the preliminary budget in early January. "I want the board to see the numbers, to see what the challenges are," Bruchak told the board at its Wednesday night operations committee meeting. Bruchak said the Act I index has been issued and he is putting together a budget timeline. The state requires the preliminary budget to be presented 90 days before the May elections. The May primary "buys us more time" this year, Bruchak said. The April primaries this year cut short the amount of time available the board had to craft the 2012-2013 budget. Bruchak said he will plan an early deadline …

Salisbury School Board OKs 4 Percent Tax Hike

The Salisbury Township School Board approved the final 2012-2013 budget, which includes a 4.06 percent tax increase.

The Salisbury Township School Board recently approved the district's final 2012-2013 budget, which includes a 4.06 percent tax increase. The $30.6 million spending plan, unanimously adopted June 13, included several staff cuts. The tax increase brings total real estate millage to 48.7540. The 4 percent tax increase means the homeowner of a property worth an average assessed value of $71,000 would pay an additional $135. "It's been a really long and difficult process," Business Administrator Christine Stafford told the school board. Stafford said she was "less than satisfied" with the final budget, but that "it protects almost all" of the programs from previous workings of the budget. The board was forced to make difficult choices as the …
