Groups Will Counter-Protest Westboro Baptist Sunday

Volunteers are planning to counter Westboro Baptist's anti-gay message of hate in the Lehigh Valley on Sunday.

Friday 9 a.m. Update: Lehigh Valley Live reports that an attorney for Westboro Baptist has confirmed the group will protest in the Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Original Story: Counter-protests are in the works in response to a Westboro Baptist press release stating the Kansas-based anti-gay group is coming to the Lehigh Valley on Sunday. It's not known if Westboro members will actually show up at the four local churches they say are "masquerading as whorehouses." Westboro failed to show up as threatened at the wake for Sandy Hook school principal Dawn Hochsprung in Connecticut last month. A volunteer biker brigade was there to shield mourners in case Westboro members protested the solemn event. South Whitehall police are planning extra patrols…

@Amanda. Have you ever seen a Westboro picket? They stand across the street with their signs and squeeky voices. We were there to block their signs from the children's view. Children should not have to see their vile signs while trying to go to sunday school or church. BTW, only 2 of the WBC group were supposed to attend. The counter protesters weren't there to disturb the peace and we didn't. …   more ›

Oops! iPhone App Finds Phone Thief

Watch out if you're planning to steal an IPhone because there's an app that can find you.

South Whitehall Police were called to LA Fitness on Dec. 17 by David Orinski, who said his iPhone had been stolen. After using the Find my iPhone app, Orinski said it led him to a home at 1160 Overlook Rd. The phone was then shut down remotely. Police report Danielle  Gehringer, 31, lives at 1160 Overlook Rd., is a member of LA Fitness and was present at the gym when the phone was taken on Dec. 16 between 2:20 and 2:45 p.m. Police said Gehringer admitted to taking possession of the phone and had it in her bedroom. The phone was recovered and returned to Orinski. A summons was sent for her to appear before Magisterial District Judge Jacob Hammond. A summons does not indicate a conviction.

Black Bear up a Tree on Springhouse Road

A black bear climbs up a tree in the backyard of a South Whitehall home Sunday afternoon.

UPDATED: 8 p.m. Emergency scanner reports this afternoon indicated residents spotted a bear running through their backyards near Sunday afternoon. By 6 p.m., a bear was about 25 feet up a tree in the backyard of 1481 Springhouse Road. At nightfall, South Whitehall Police and the Pa. Game Commission were still waiting under the trees a distance away. The bear was too high to tranquilize, according to a report by WFMZ. Vickery said the bear took a swipe at the dog, and the dog bit the bear before the bear went up the tree. A small group of neighbors stood across from the house watching …
