Why I Won't Mourn Peter Parker

Comic book deaths seem to be easily rewritten.

I've written here before about my love of comic books, but I'd have a tough time telling you what most superheroes are up to these days. Still, it wasn't much of a surprise today to learn that Peter Parker -- aka Spider-man -- had died.  According to the Associated Press, Parker met his end in issue 700 of The Amazing Spider-man. In that issue, he and long-time villain Doctor Octopus switch bodies, Freaky Friday-style, leaving Parker trapped in Octopus' dying body. Meanwhile, Octopus takes over as Spider-man, and tries his hand at being a hero.  It's pretty convoluted, but the kind of thing that happens all the time in comics. "Captain America" Gets an Easy 'A'

This latest Marvel film is a patriotic thrill ride that's entertaining and heartwarming.

Fact: Americans love movies about Americans kicking Nazi butt. Fact: Americans love Marvel Comics. Combine the two, and you have a heartwarming, inspiring summer blockbuster that will entertain and enchant kids and adults alike. I’ve absolutely lost count of how many Marvel characters have appeared on the big screen, but of them all, you’d be hard pressed to find one more sympathetic and endearing than “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is a little man with a big heart. It’s New York in 1941, and all Rogers wants to do is stand up for his country, as he feels is his duty. Unfortunately, his small stature and lengthy list of health problems – from fatigue to asthma – has landed him on the 4-F list more times …
